Daily Slideshow: Annual RWB New Year Meet Calls for Modified Porsches

The Tokyo Auto Salon is an annual event that has been attracting larger and larger crowds over the past few years. This year was no different, as the show celebrated its 36th anniversary with 319,030 people in attendance. One of the highlights of the show is the annual Rauh-Welt Begriff (RWB) Porsche meet. The event calls for modified Porsches, which you can check out over the next few slides.

The RWB Connection

The RWB meet takes place the night before the first day of Auto Salon. This year, it was held at the Hard Rock Cafe located inside the Roppongi district. The RWB has become a household name in the industry, and this casual meet has grown into a mandatory tradition for any enthusiast in town for Auto Salon.

A Small Get-Together

If you’re ever fortunate enough to attend the event, don’t expect to bear witness to hundreds of Porsches. Instead, what you’ll see are two dozen or so hardcore RWB build-ups.

Meant To Be Driven

Where the RWBs you might see at SEMA or Wekfest are nice to look at, the 911s from Japan are actually driven and they’re driven pretty hard. In fact, a lot of them are seen at the track on weekends.

Bumps And Bruises

This is actually purposeful. When founder Akira Nakai created RWB two-and-a-half decades back, he wanted for each of his projects to be rough around the edges (hence the "rough world" name). So, it’s been fairly common to see RWB Porsches with zip-ties, tape, and bruises. That’s not to say these cars are entirely thrashed, but you will see that each car has its fair share of wear and tear.

Feels Like A Family

Being that it is a small and exclusive band of RWB Porsche lovers, the meet feels familiar and comfortable. The people are extremely enthusiastic and their shared passion makes for an incredibly exhilarating atmosphere to be a part of. You can feel the love in the air, and hear it too!
