992 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Lights Up the Nürburgring

Last October, Porsche announced that the newest 911 GT3 RS had lapped the legendary Nurburgring in just 6:49.328 minutes - an incredible 10.6 seconds faster than the current 911 GT3. This was an incredible result by any measure, a feat accomplished largely thanks to the addition of some clever aero and other engineering tweaks. Now, a private party has replicated that act, as we can see in this video from Sport Auto.

Pretty Close

Not everyone is quite as good as, say, a factory Porsche driver at this iconic circuit, but the latest 911 GT3 RS is a car that's quick no matter who might be behind the wheel. For this particular run, which was unsanctioned and not an official timed lap, Christian Gebhardt hopped behind the wheel and managed to come pretty close to Porsche's time by completing a lap in just 6:54.99.

Big Difference

That time is still roughly 1.5 seconds quicker than the last-gen GT3 RS, which was piloted by a Porsche driver. However, it is a solid 10 seconds off Porsche's official pace, which shows just how much of a difference a factory driver can make in a car like this.

Big Caveat

It is worth noting that this particular run was accomplished using the old method of timing laps at the 'ring, which involves bypassing part of the start and finish line in favor of a different location. The new configuration would have resulted in a slightly slower time as a result.

Hidden Talent

Regardless, this is an impressive feat, and proves that just about any wannabe hotshoe can hop behind the wheel of the GT3 RS and rip off a pretty solid lap time. This is a car that just makes us look like better drivers than we might be, which is another testament to just how great it truly is.
