Unusual Pairing

The modern-day Porsche 911 is known for being a refined, seriously fast machine that's also quite comfortable for long-distance trips as well. But in terms of the iconic model's lineup, it's a fact that the Turbo is the best drag racer of the bunch, while the GT3 is made for the twisties. However, that didn't stop the folks at Motorsport Magazine from pitting the new 992 911 GT3 against a Lamborghini Huracan STO in an intriguing drag race recently.

The Contender

The STO version of the Huracan is powered by Lamborghini's naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 that cranks out 631 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque, and it also sounds like a Lamborghini should. Like the GT3, the STO features a host of additional aero bits designed to make it faster around a track, though it still does 0-62 mph in just 3.0 seconds.

Power Disadvantage

The 992 911 GT3 also comes equipped with a naturally-aspirated powerplant, but in this case, it's Porsche's 4.0-liter flat-six that makes 502 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. That's a pretty substantial power disadvantage in this case, while the GT3's 0-62 time is a bit slower at 3.4 clicks too.

Longer Race

This particular race isn't a quarter-mile romp like most - rather, the folks at Motorsport Magazine decide to embark on a 1,000-meter contest to let these two epic sports car stretch their proverbial legs.

Results

The results, however, are pretty much what one would expect from this pairing - the Huracan gets a jump off the line and never gives up that lead, equalling its factory rating of 0-62 mph in 3 seconds flat. It took a total of 8.9 seconds to reach 124 mph and 19.4 seconds to finish the longer race.

Gaining Ground

As for the GT3, it managed to get to 60 a little quicker than its factory rating at 3.2 seconds, hitting 124 mph in 10.6 seconds - nearly two seconds behind its foe - but gained a ton of ground at the top end, finishing in 20.1 seconds - 0.7 clicks slower than the far more powerful Lamborghini.

Impressive Finish

While the Porsche lost this particular race, it's still an impressive result for a car that isn't designed for ultimate straight-line performance. The fact that the GT3 is down big power on the Lamborghini yet it still managed to nearly beat it in this longer drag race says a lot about its lofty capabilities.
