6 Reasons You Should Buy a Porsche Over a Tesla
New Year's Eve is one of the best days on record to purchase a car. With that in mind keep your friends and loved ones away from considering buying a Tesla instead of a Porsche. Turn them around with these six reasons before it's too late.
1. A proud history of excellence
The first Porsche, the 356 roadster, was produced in 1948. Designed by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, it borrowed many components from the Volkswagen Type 1 that had been designed by his father and first marketed in 1938. Dr. Ing. Porsche's original VW design was so advanced that the basic rear-engine, air-cooled, unitized pan and body configuration remained unchanged until the advent of the water-cooled Porsche 996 in 1999. The iconic line of cars that began with the first 356 has represented an uninterrupted family of astoundingly beautiful, fast, and superb handling sports cars, sedans, and SUVs, now more highly sought after than ever.
2. The Porsche Museum
Built as a fitting monument to Porsche's unparalleled leadership in automotive design and manufacture, the Porsche Museum was first opened to the public in 2009. Not only does it exhibit 80 significant Porsche vehicles, it documents the company's history and achievements. The building itself "...creates a space that gives architectural expression to the company’s confident outlook and discerning standards, while also capturing Porsche’s dynamism. Knowledge, credibility and determination are as fundamental to the philosophy as courage, excitement, power, and independence." [Ref: Architect Delugan Meissl remarks at the building's dedication ceremony.]
3. Legendary racing heritage
Consider the Porsche 917. So dominant in 1970s Enduro (e.g., 24 hours of Le Mans) and Can Am racing that the governing bodies of each outlawed the car after the 1971 (FIA) and 1973 (SCCA) seasons respectively. This awesome vehicle only lost one race of the dozens into which it was entered from late 1969 through the end of 1971. One. Its turbocharged 12-cylinder air-cooled engine developed over 1000 hp, enabling it to win the championship in every series for which it was eligible. Far from being the exception, the success of the 917 has been closely paralleled by dozens of Porsche competition models, from the 1951 Le Mans class-winning 356 to overall 2015 Le Mans champion hybrid 919.
4. Canyon carving skills
Most car enthusiasts will agree: there is no better canyon carver than a Porsche. Yes, a Tesla Model S will out accelerate most any production car on the planet. But it doesn't provide the impeccable balance, nimble reflexes, perfectly placed controls, and rewarding mechanical feedback of a 911, a Cayman, or a Boxster. Do you love high-speed motoring with breathtaking views and demanding curves? Then your choice is very easy.
5. Comprehensive product lineup
For a company that set out to create the ultimate sports car and succeeded to such a degree that its classic models now command prices up to 100 times higher than their original MSRPs, it is not surprising that Porsche now offers a very large range of vehicles. Comprised of two sizes of SUV (Macan and Cayenne), an iconic world-class sports car (911), a coupe and roadster version of the lightweight and superb handling mid-engine sports car (Cayman and Boxster), and a grand touring sedan with startling performance and comfort (Panamera), it is not inconceivable that the lineup could supply each member of a "Porsche family" with his or her personal version of driving bliss.
6. The debut of the all-electric Porsche
If your friend is dead set on buying an all-electric vehicle, encourage them to wait for the production version of the Porsche Mission E Concept, due in 2020. Although the four- seater's performance promises to be nearly equal to that of the Tesla S in Ludicrous Mode, its real advantage will lie in its much shorter charging times. Using an 800-volt supply (as opposed to the Tesla Supercharger's 480), Porsche promises an 80% full battery -- good for about 250 miles of range -- in only 15 minutes. On the other hand, it takes the Tesla system twice as long to provide about 170 miles of range. When you further consider Porsche's advantage in heritage, racing legacy, and driving precision, doesn't it make sense to wait?
