5 Porsches We Can't Wait to See Again

Porsche has a great lineup today, but bringing back these five models would make it even greater.

1. 944

Porsche created the Boxster as their new, entry level model. But prices have slowly crept up over the years, to the point where it's pretty hard to consider the 718 as a base model. So why not bring back the 944 and slap a reasonable price tag on it? The 944 is in itself was a great car when Porsche offered it, but it was maybe a little ahead of its time. Today it might really strike a cord with those looking for an affordable front engine, rear wheel drive sports car with an unbeatable pedigree.

2. 912

As much as a lot of people hate on the 912, there are quite a few reasons why it might actually succeed in today's world. For one, look no further than the 718 Boxster and Cayman as proof that four cylinder performance is the wave of the future for many cars. And with the 911 growing in both size and complexity, wouldn't it be nice to have a cheaper, lighter, and nimbler version available?

3. 911 Carrera RS

Porsche revived the spirit of the 1972-1973 911 Carrera RS in 1991 and kept it around through 1996. The formula is simple - take a rear wheel drive 911 and make it lighter, then add power. If Porsche brought back the Carrera RS today, it would easily slot into an already crowded lineup. That's because it represents a value compared to uber 911's like the GT3, RS, and Turbo. It might not have near the performance of those models, but it would be a great, less expensive alternative for enthusiasts who care more about driving than exclusivity and driver aids.

4. Cayman R

As great as the regular Cayman is/was, the Cayman R was even better. It was quicker, lighter, and agiler, even though it only received a moderate 10 horsepower boost over the Cayman S. But a fairly significant 120-140 pound weight loss (depending on which options you chose) diet worked wonders for the little coupe. That led to some serious magic in the handling department. It also makes the Cayman R a proper no frills driver's car for people who love driving.

5. 911 GT2

The rebirth of the 911 GT2 is supposedly underway, so this one might be a bit of a stretch. But we'd be remiss to leave out one of the most insane Porsche models ever built. The formula for madness is quite simple - take the already excellent GT3 RS chassis and body, then add prodigious amounts of turbocharged goodness. The last generation of GT2, built from 2007-2009, was an incredibly formidable car for its time. But the new one is rumored to take 911 performance to a whole new level, with somewhere near 700 horsepower driving the rear wheels.
