Carrera GT V10

5.7 liters with 603 BHP and 435lb-ft of torque is all it took to shoot you to a top speed of 205mph in what is arguably the greatest sounding engine of all time. Dubbed the 980/01, this all-aluminum V10 was the stuff of legend. The chain-driven dual overhead camshafts that allowed the car to rev to just over 8,000 screaming RPM.

1973 RSR 3.8

Ok, maybe the only thing better sounding than a Carrera GT's V10 at full song is the drunken raspy madness that pours out of a 73 RSR’s tailpipes when it starts up. While they only produced half the power of the CGT, they had a tremendous way of doing it. These cars have a dry weight of 1,850lbs which means horsepower goes a long way. Besides, who doesn’t love a proper carburetor setup?

917/30 Turbo flat 12

This is an engine that looks like it came out of an era where turbocharging was about as refined as bulldozing a house. It’s called Turbo-Panzer which basically translates to turbo tank. Accurate! Because it probably feels like shooting yourself out of a cannon when you press the throttle pedal to the floor. Power in these engines exceeded 1,500 horsepower in qualifying trim. Insane.

919 Turbo V4

Moving away from the Turbo-Panzer and into the realm of fine watch-making precision, we find the 919 V4. This is the most current and cutting-edge Le Mans platform that has ever been created. This is the engine. With only 2 liters of displacement, the power output is 500bhp. Paired to electric motors the total power can be increased to 1,000hp. It weighs next to nothing and can be packaged with extreme levels of efficiency.

911 GT2 RS

Here, we find the crown jewel of road cars: the fastest engine that has ever been placed into production by Porsche. You can register this one at the DMV and then pull off with 700 horsepower on tap. Just don’t let them see you on your way out. Variable turbine geometry is found on the turbocharger which allows the vanes to change to increase response time. Turbo lag is minimized by this tech, which Porsche pioneered.

Porsche Perfect

All of these engines are distinctly unique and have created a character that makes up the brand identity of Porsche. While they all feel different, there is no denying each accomplishes a specific goal and does so without compromises. In road cars and racing cars, Porsche is always on the leading edge of what is possible and always making the competition work hard to keep up.
