5 Coolest Porsche Concept Cars

It doesn't get any cooler than these five Porsche concept cars.

1. Type 754 T7

The Type 754 T7 might look a little homely thanks to its awkward humpback rear end, but this car is a direct predecessor of the 911. Thankfully, after the car debuted in 1959, Porsche quickly realized that it need to retool the design into a two-plus-two fastback. Because everybody values styling over rear passenger comfort, right? Regardless, the 754 is a very important car in Porsche history for that very reason.

2. 989 Concept

The 989 concept was, quite simply, way ahead of its time. Back in 1988 when this thing debuted, the idea of a four-door Porsche was absolute blasphemy. The automaker had to wait another 22 years before the world was ready for such a creation. But the 989 wasn't a total failure, as several styling elements on the car made it to various production models in the years to come.

3. Cayenne Cabriolet Concept

Until now, nobody outside of Porsche had ever seen the Cayenne Cabriolet Concept. Probably for good reason. But now that Nissan and Land Rover have actually produced convertible SUV's, they probably figured why not? Built back in 2002, the Cayenne Cabriolet is exactly what you think it is - a Cayenne with the roof chopped off. It isn't completely hideous, but we imagine the market for such a ride is rather tiny.

4. 918 Spyder Concept

The 918 Spyder Concept is an obvious choice here. Looking back, it is rather notable that the production 918 retained so much of the concept's styling. It's also pretty hard to believe that this thing was built a full seven years ago. Rarely do cars, concept or not, age so gracefully. But Porsche could probably still build this thing ten years from now and nobody would bat an eye.

5. Mission E Concept

The Mission-E is an incredible exercise in design, one that has already influenced some current and future Porsche models. The spaceship derived single taillight landed on the new Panamera and it appears headed toward the next 911 as well. Aside from that, the electric drivetrain signals the winds of change for Porsche. And what better way to usher in a new era than with your coolest concept car of all time.
