1. Boxster

If you want modern Porsche performance on a budget, it's hard (impossible) to beat the Boxster. Thanks to its incredible success, there are tons of used examples out there, and they can be had really cheap. Like $10-$20,000 cheap even for the more powerful S model. Early base models are the cheapest but didn't have a ton of power, but all feature excellent chassis dynamics and balanced handling.

2. 912

The 912 has all the great looks of a 60's era 911 but without the exorbitant price tag. The reason for that, of course, is that the 912 uses a four-cylinder engine in place of the iconic air-cooled flat six. Producing barely over 100 horsepower, the 912 is no barn burner, but it does handle amazingly well thanks in part to its light weight and superior weight distribution. Plus, only savvy onlookers will know that you aren't driving a 911.

3. 944

The 944 is what many consider to be the ultimate starter Porsche. It's affordable, looks good, rides great, and features excellent handling. The 944 was a critically acclaimed car in its day as well, mostly thanks to it's the excellent balance of power and driving characteristics. Maxing out at just over 200 hp, the 944 isn't going to win you many drag races. But it will put a big smile on your face for very little money.

4. 914

The 914 is a widely panned and often criticized car. But what was intended as a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen turned out to be a unique little car that might be your cheapest ticket to owning a real Porsche. With a curb weight of just over 2,000 pounds and a fully independent suspension, the 914 is a great handling car as well. Like most cheap Porsches, however, the 914 is down on power compared to it's bigger brethren. But as cheap as they are, you'll have plenty of money left over for upgrades.

5. 928

The 928, once the most expensive Porsche you could buy, has become incredibly affordable on the used car market. It was a critical success, one that offered solid performance and great handling in a true GT car. Although, at the time purists were put off by the car being front engined and water cooled which tied to the increased price led many to languish in showrooms. The 928 became more and more powerful over the years, peaking out in 1995 with a 170 mph top speed. Routine maintenance is key, however, so be sure and shop carefully. Repairs can be quite expensive, but the 928's power plants have held up well over time.
