2017 Porsche Cayenne Sets New World Record (Photos)
Porsche is no stranger to world records, and it has a long resume of impressive records and races, but this one is a new, unexpected one.
1. The Star
The star of this incredible stunt is a 2017 Porsche Cayenne S Diesel. What is even more incredible is that this Cayenne was completely stock, with just a standard tow bar. The tow bar was slightly modified with a different fitting that would allow it to do what you're about to see.
2. Engine and Specs
The 2017 Porsche Cayenne S Diesel is equipped with a 4.1-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. The eight-cylinder motor produces 385 horsepower, and 627 pound feet of torque. The official tow rating for this Porsche is 7,700 pounds; however, if you take things slow and controlled, you can tow just about anything.
3. Guinness World Record
Richard Payne, a Porsche technician in England, was behind the wheel when this 2017 Porsche Cayenne S Diesel officially broke the Guinness World Record for the heaviest aircraft ever pulled by a production vehicle. The stock V8 Cayenne pulled an Air France Airbus A380 jumbo jet.
4. Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport
The successful attempt took place on one of the runways at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport. Richard Payne pulled the 285 metric tons' A380 Airbus, which is roughly 628,000 pounds. This new record beats the last record with over 127 tons. The 2017 Cayenne S Diesel pulled the plane for 239 feet, which is still less than the length of the plane involved in this record breaking madness.
5. The American Version
The American market was impressed, but not happy, simply because the Porsche that broke the record is a European version that isn't allowed in America. Fortunately, Porsche repeated the stunt with the American version of the Cayenne, a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. This Porsche is equipped with a 4.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which develops 570 horsepower, and 590 pound-feet of torque. When this Porsche doesn't have a 628-pound plane attached to it, it can reach up to 176 mph. Click here to see the video of the Porsche Cayenne breaking the Guinness World Record.
