Rare 1993 Porsche Schuppan 962CR appears in Jay Leno's Garage

When a rare 1993 Porsche Schuppan 962CR found itself in Jay Leno's Garage, the celebrated TV host wasted no time getting down to business. Leno and the current owner, Matthew Ivanhoe, covered everything from the basics to fun details about the dreamy road-legal racer.

One of the world's rarest cars

Only six Porsche Schuppan 962CR models exist. The road-legal racer was inspired by the Schuppan-owned Porsche 962. Not only did Schuppan have the pleasure of owning such a prized possession, but he also raced it. The Le Mans winner inspired many elements of the closely related 962CR, including its distinctive carbon body.

A new owner

Matthew Ivanhoe, president of Cultivated Collector and rare classic and exotic supercar fan, purchased this rare Porsche in 2018. According to Wikipedia, the car was originally priced over $1.5 million (new) in 1994. However, Ivanhoe hasn't revealed how much he paid for the classic.

Just one mile on the odometer

After purchasing the vehicle, Ivanhoe confirmed that there is only one mile on the odometer. The car has never been driven on the streets. In fact, because it wasn't driven much since it was constructed, the Porsche required a bit of work to get it running again. Fortunately, Ivanhoe says, the car didn't really need anything more than some new seals and lines to get it back into shape.

An intense streetcar experience

During his visit with Leno, Ivanhoe revealed that this particular Porsche was designed to be "one of the most intense street car experiences" a car can offer. It's not just the lightweight carbon fiber body and sheer power that makes the car zoom, though. The 962CR weighs about 2,300 pounds, and the two front seats are as close together as possible for improved center of gravity.

Look under the hood

Given its propensity to heat up quickly, the Porsche Schuppan 962CR needed an efficient way to keep its engine cool. Ivanhoe notes that in 1993, the cylinder heads were water cooled, but the cylinders themselves were air cooled. The efficient system kept the flat six, 3.2-liter model cool and ready to perform.

Built for speed

On low boost, the Porsche Schuppan 962CR puts out 550 horsepower. The race car can get up to 850 horsepower on high boost, although Ivanhoe cautions against maintaining that amount of power for an extended amount of time. The engine is paired with a standard 962 gearbox and a five-speed transmission.

Bridging a 30-year gap

With a price tag of roughly $1.5 million new, it's no secret that the Porsche Schuppan 962CR was expensive to build. Its expensive nature played a role in Schuppan's eventual bankruptcy declaration. Combined with the fact that the Porsche was designed more for the race track than legal road drives, it's understandable that Ivanhoe's classic hardly ever had the chance to show off in the 30 years since its birth.

A road-worthy conversion

Converting the 962 to the street-worthy 962CR wasn't as tricky as you might think. Schuppan kept the conversion short and sweet with the addition of two leather seats and a radio. Air conditioning was ultimately added as well to keep drivers comfortable.

The test drive

After covering all the details in the garage, Leno concluded the episode by insisting on a track ride. The ride is understandably fast, and a bit loud, thanks to its enormous power. "It's loud in here, but it's not obnoxious," observes Leno. "It's a good kind of loud," adds Ivanhoe. Although Ivanhoe isn't sure the Porsche will see lots of time on the road, the track workout was a good start.
