Luftgekühlt 5: The Ultimate Classic Porsche Show

Porsche's heritage is rooted deep into its dominance in racing and its production of the world's most celebrated sports cars. Southern California is home to some of the most prestigious classic Porsches and over 600 of them were displayed at the Luftgekühlt 5 automotive culture event hosted by Porsche racing driver Patrick Long and Howie Idelson.

Patrick Long thoroughly analyzed row after row of amazing Porsches and hand-picked ten automobiles that stood out to him. Read on to find out what makes each of the ten cars worthy of making Long's list!

Pre-A 1954 Porsche 356 Speedster

This Pre-A 1954 Porsche 356 Speedster caught Long's eye due to its stunning condition! The 956 is so clean that it likely surpasses the factory quality standards when the car hit showrooms in 1954. On top of that, the period-correct Speedster Blue color combination elevates this classic to a new level.

Survivor 1969 Porsche 911S

Long took notice of this 1969 Porsche 911S not because it was visually immaculate, but because it was all original and mechanically perfect! This Porsche has been put through the test of time and maintained with a keen eye to keep the 2.0L powered long wheelbase 911 cruising down the road.

LeMans Winning Porsche 964 Carrera 3.8 RSR

Sometimes the story behind a car makes it invaluable! This LeMans Winning Porsche 964 Carrera 3.8 RSR is an excellent artifact of Porsche's dominance at the 13.6km track. This particular car won in the GT class in the 1993 season with seasoned drivers Jurgen Barth, Joel Gouhier and Dominique Dupuy in the driver's seat.

All Original Porsche 356

Who doesn't appreciate a thick layer of original patina? This all original 1953 Pre-A Porsche 356 remains untouched and is a true survivor. Throughout its 65-year life, this car has only been through 2 owner's hands.

The Infamous 1996 RUF BTR

RUF, a German Porsche tuning firm, is infamous for the utter dominance of the CTR Yellowbird that was released in 1987. After that hot-rodded 911 put RUF on the map, the BTR continued to flex the tuning firm's muscles. Patrick Long described the 1996 RUF BTR as a car that has immense performance capabilities but it is not appreciated enough for its top-class fit and finish.

Ultra Cool Porsche 908K

Prototype race cars almost always define the technological prowess of the era. Most 908's were built as long-tail models for increased aerodynamics and stability on the massive Mulsanne straight on the LeMans circuit. However, a few short tail models were produced for tracks like Spa where having more nimble handling dynamics benefitted the driver. This particular 908K was driven by Vic Elford for the 1968 Spa 1,000km race!

Rally Proven 1984 911 SC/RS

Not all Porsches were raced on paved circuits! This 1984 911 SC/RS is 1 of only 20 examples built by Weissach for the FIA Rally Group B championship. To help the 911 fly around the rally course, over 500lbs were trimmed off the vehicle and 50 horsepower was added to it!

Super Rare 1949 Porsche 356/2 Coupe Gmünd

The Porsche 356 project started life in the small Austrian city of Gmünd. This is where 52 356 Porsches were hand-built from aluminum. Out of the cars that were built, only 30 are known to exist today making this 356 ultra-rare and priceless!

Fiesty 4-cam Ice Racer 356

Porsches find themselves in every corner of the globe and are adapted to race in any driving condition! An excellent example is this 356 that was built to be an ice racer in Sweden. It is powered by a hopped up 4-cam engine and the owner even displays the spiked tires that the car wore when it raced on frozen lakes!

The Storied 1962 Porsche 804 F1

Porsche's history in F1 is not well-known but this 1962 804 F1 car was driven by Dan Gurney to a victory in Stuttgart! A 185-hp Flat 8 pushed this vehicle to outcompete all others but Porsche decided to reallocate its resources in sports car racing and production vehicles at the end of the 1962 season. Therefore, Porsche withdrew from the F1 series and the money saved was put into the development of the magical 911.
