Sport Edition Cup 4 - OK for Track Use?
 

I bought a set of Sport Edition Cup 4s (LINK) to use as my winter wheels, but with the purchase of a new DD, have decided not to drive the 997 in the winter. I still have the wheels and the winter tires are toast anyway, so I was thinking about using them as dedicated track wheels for next season's DEs.

The wheels are one-piece cast and kinda heavy for 18s, but figure they should be ok for a couple events a year and running on non-R compound tires. Eventually, I'd like to get some C12s from CCW, but I'd rather put that money into events for the time being.

Just curious to know if anyone else has had experience with this particular brand on the track and your thoughts.

It's not the lightest wheel, so steering response and turn-in won't be what you would expect from a lighter, track oriented wheel. Any wheel can be tracked as long as you periodically inspect it for stress cracking. Most track related wheel failures occur not because the wheel is junk, but because fatigue wasn't caught before it turned int a failure. You can read up here.

I have a lot of respect for Damon at Tirerack, and have purchased many tires from him over the years - both street tires and track tires.

Heaviness of the wheel aside, personally I would not trust a Chinese-made cast wheel for track use. There are some areas where you can economize on track items, and some areas (wheels, safety equipment, etc.) where it just doesn't make sense to risk your life just to save a few dollars.
I would use the Sport Edition Cup 4's as a street wheel where you're not subjecting them to the extreme forces of racing/track driving.
