Default Need some opinions on tyres for an '88 Carrera

Lame subject title I know, but the search option just didn't do it for me so..... The PO of my Carrera put two sets of Dunlop SP Sport 8000 on and now its time for me to bite the bullet and "anty up". I wanted to ask the opinion of other 911 owners who have had different makes of tyre, what they like.

Here is the problem. Thru work I get an incredible deal on Bridgestone/Firestone tyres, if purchased at a B/F dealer. S-02 are just about impossible to find here in Indiana and I've read some unflattering complaints about the s-03s'. As recently as yesterday and friend of mine claimed his E46 M3 is now more uncomfortable to drive after mounting a set of S-03s. So what other tyres have y'all tried with success? I'm considering the Michelin Pilot Sport, Goodyear F1 GSD3, and the Yokohama Avs ES100.

If y'all have any ideas that would be a great help. I wouldn't mind some input on the Goodyear but I don't think anyone has purchased any yet. Is the S-02 really worth searching high and low for?

Thanks for your time.

I like the AVS Sports that I have on my 87 Targa. I have heard good things about the ES100's too. Believe half what you read on the internet.

I don't own a 911 but I currently own the Pilot Sport Rib, AVS Sport, ES100, and S-03 on different cars including 928 and 944. I had the SP8000 on my 944 before I replaced them with the AVS Sport. So speaking from experience the Pilot Sport is the best all around tire; the S-03 is the most sporting, and the AVS Sport is in between the two. The ES100 is not in the same class as the other three, it is much softer and is more suitable for a sedan - they work very well on my Mercedes. Hope this help.

Weaver,

Have you looked over the Tire Rack web site, to see what others have said about various tires? They also have tire test data too.

Try Tirerack, just bought a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 on sale plus a 50 dollar savings bond from Goodyear, great reviews, very happy with them so far

Thanks for everyones replies. I had planned on using TireRack anyway if I wasn't going to buy Firestone. Back in '91 I got a set of 205/50/15 Goodyear ZR50 "s" tyres for my VW Corrado for $52 a corner on sale! Remember the "S" was the comp tyre in the '80's and '90's! They didn't last very long, but I was an amazing summer in the north Georgia mountains!

Qball- I would like to know more about your feeling on the F1 GS-D3 since with both have the same chassis. You are the first person I've heard who owns these tyres other than TireRack comments posters, none of which have a J series 911.

Thanks for your time

Weaver,
I have less than 50 mi. on the f1's so its kind of hard to give a full report yet but here goes, they replaced an older set of yoko's that were on the car when I bought it. Compared to them they ride quieter, track truer and corner with much more grip, previosly owning a vette I still read the corvette forum website and read rave reviews on them, that and the tire rack reviews led me to buy. What suprised me was that the tires are made in Germany, not the USA. Over all I'm very pleased, if looks are important to you the aggresive tread is great eye candy.

Weaver what sizes? We still have some DD S-02s here. Are you offered the EPP through the race team?

205/55/16 & 225/50/16

I actually don't know what what the acronym "EPP" stand for but my deal is through one of the engineers at Blackburn racing services, which now is Firestone Competition here in Indy. So really its not through the team, but from being nice to the engineers walking up and down pit lane. I think I saved this guys life once a few years ago and we have become friends. Really, really good guys up here and in Nashville.

I think its for 10% below dealer cost, which I 'm sure is not as good as you get them for. I've got two other cars to get tyres for and only two opportunities to use the discount so.........

Thanks for your time Matt...
