Default Toyo RA-1, 275's on rear of '91 964... stay tuned!

Tomorrow she's going for a new set of rubber, Toyo RA-1, 275/40/17 rear and 235/40/17 front.. on those pesky Fikse FM10 wheels.. Funny but one of the wrenches says "no problem, they'll go right on", the other one just sorta made a funny face and said "you're gonna have to roll the fenders" So we'll see whose right. Question, is rolling the fenders a BAD thing to do? as in would you do it to your car for clearance?

Quite a few folks with SC/Carrera flared cars and 245/275 (F/R) combination. I figure if they can do it, you can. Rolled fenders and negative camber of course.

Just got the call from Paul. He said he's sorry but the tire....

Kidding! went on without a hitch (well he did have to shift an oil line over a bit) No rubbing, no rolled fenders, no spacers!

He spent a fair amount of time with the car up on the "table", even used a "come-a-long" to compress the suspension(I don't even want to know how he did that!) He spent as much time fixing a small curb rash on one rear wheel, "first I used this, then that, then a finer this and finally a polish, you can hardly see it now" Christ I could hardly see it before!

I love my shop!

First impressions of the Toyo RA 1. Compared to the old Yoko 32's the Toyo is QUIET! Like a new car, but now I can hear every little noise, that'll take some getting used to. The side walls are not as stiff as the Yoko so the turn in and time to "set" is a little slower, but once ther're on set they feel real good, we'll see on sunday's autoX what the real feel is. Out on the highway they are smooth, almost touring smooth. I'll try to post a pic soon.

Second Impression of Toyo RA 1, 235 front, 275 rear. AutoX, about 60deg. F., cloudy. Found they were not as sticky(although tire temps really never came up) as the yoko 32, the front plowed(understeer) which I never had with the yoko. Played with pressures some to get the wear over to the arrows, some improvement on understeer. This tire behaves much more like a street tire than a race tire, I was able to control some better the tailout powerslides, than the yokos, which were very hard to catch once they broke loose. I'll check my cold tire pressures and check for rubbing and post again. I'm not convinced these are great tires for a 964.......

9/21/03 - checked cold air pressure, 27 front and 33 rear

What size were your old tires?

The old Yoko's were 255/40/17 rear and 235/40/17 front, I know where your're going with this, but I had no problem breaking the rear loose with the 255's so I thought 275's might help balance the car a little, perhaps it has had the opposite effect?

I just bought a '92 964 that came with the Yoko's in 235/275. I've never used these tires before - what sort of inflation pressures did you find work with your car (cold and hot)?

I was surprised by the 235's up front (on a 7" cup wheel) as it seems like more tire than appropriate for a 7" rim.

Well, it had the desired effect it seems...just too much of it!

You can try playing around with tire pressures and ride height (raising/lowering ends of the car by small amounts if that is adjustable on your suspension)
