As you did, if you take it to a reputable tire shop and they say it's fine, I won't second guess.

I wouldn't worry on a street car. I assume the inside of the tire looks perfect. There appears to be extra meat on what is effectively the 'rim protector'.

It's a gouge out of the rim protector, that's why they put them on. Should be safe for street use. If you're concerned, demount and check the inside of the carcass.

If that portion of the sidewall was too thin and degraded, it would blister. A Prius driver would be of greater concern on the highway.

I would not be concerned. Now if it were a bubble on the sidewall, it's time for replacement.

If there is no interior construction visible (cords, etc), than it is cosmetic and OK.
