Default wider tires - conventional wisdom?

What is the conventional wisdom regarding going one size wider in tire width on the same wheels? i.e. my 993 has 8" fronts, 10" rears with 225 and 285, respectively, being the correct size for the wheel. Can one generally go one size wider? i.e. can I go 235's and 295's on the same wheels with no problems?

What say you?

Thanks.

most tire sites will give you the recommended wheel widths on their web sites, "generally" speaking you can go one size up, you may want to adjust the profile of the tire (second number on the tire size) to keep the rolling diameter the same... this will also be on the tire manufacturers sites.

Yep, tire companies list recommended wheel width's for each tire size (not just based on width, but also sidewall aspect ratio and diameter). I would stick to that.

Take care,
