Default Alternate 17" Tire Sizes for 996 Snow Tires?

I'm having one hell of a time finding a matching set of performance winter tires in the factory sizes of 205/50-17 and 255/40-17 for my 2000 996 C2. The closest match that I've found is Falken Eurowinters, but the fronts are model HS499 and the rears are HS439. Vredestein makes them but everything is back ordered. I'd like to stay with 17" to use my OEM twist wheels, and I'll upgrade to 18" this summer with a new set of summer tires. Can someone suggest a close alternate size to the factory sizes that will open up some options?

Before I was able to find a used set of Michelin Pilot Alpins, I had looked into this and reached the same conclusion that you apparently have ... there don't seem to be many winter tires available in a 255/40-17. Tire gurus can chime in on this, but the available size that looked feasible was a 245/45-17, which is slightly (2.6%) larger in diameter but pretty close in terms of size and load rating. With the 245's on the back you should be able to get a matching set, I think.

That's a good suggestion. I have also been looking at 235/45 which is slightly narrower but very close in all other dimensions, and also has a lot more options than the 255/40.

I'm hopeful that I've found a full set of correctly sized Vredensteins today, I'm waiting on an email reply.
