Tire guages...
 

sorry if this was discussed previously, but I cannot search this forum...

What are recommended tire guages? I know Porsche has a digital and a dial model. Is one more accurate, more durable? I asked a local service mgr and he did not know.

Also are other models significantly better than the Porsche ones?

If you want to elaborate further for the group, what should one look for in a guage besides accuracy, durability (oops - dropped it!) and ease of use?

Check these out, http://www.getagauge.com/ I've got one of the EZ-Air's . Inexpensive accurate and easy to use, you can spend alot more and get a lot less.

FYI, below I've added the info I received from emailing getaguage.com as far as accuracy. The Porsche digital guage measures in 0.5 psi increments and is accurate to +/- 1 psi. I do not know about the Porsche dial guages.

The accuracy on the dial gauges is +/- 2% in the middle 50% of the range and 3% below 25% and above 75%. More information is available at http://www.getagauge.com/faq.cfm#accuracy . The digital gauges are accurate to 1%.

How accurate are the gauges?
All Accu-Gage® 2" and 2-1/2" dial gauges are ANSI Commerical Grade B gauges, which is the best quality gauge typically used for tire pressure applications.
These gauges use a fully geared, solid brass precision movement with bronze bourdon tube. Unlike piston-plunger-type gauges, the bourdon tube movement is not affected by changes in temperature, humidity, altitude or air stream contaminants.
The mechanical accuracy rating is ± 2% from 25% to 75% of scale and ± 3% below 25% and above 75%.


A 15 psi gauge is accurate to ± 0.5 psi from 4 psi to 11 psi and is calibrated to ± 0.25 psi at 7.5 psi.
A 30 psi gauge is accurate to ± 0.6 psi from 8 psi to 22 psi and is calibrated to ± 0.5 psi at 15 psi.
A 60 psi gauge is accurate to +/- 1.2 psi from 15 to 45 psi and is calibrated to ± 1 psi at 30 psi.
A 100 psi gauge is accurate to ± 2 psi from 25 to 75 psi and is calibrated to ± 1.5 psi at 50 psi.
A 160 psi gauge is accurate to ± 3.2 psi from 40 - 120 and is calibrated to ± 2 psi at 80 psi.

One more late reply: I read a test/review of tire guages in European car magazine about 2 years back, they tested quite a few gauges including some really expensive ones (snap-on too IIRC). The one they liked best (and that was most accurate) was the 'Stetho-Guage', $5.99 at Harbor Freight tools.
