Post Need help with wheel sizes

I am in the process of upgrading to big reds, and my wonderful Kenesis Supercup wheels (17x7.5 17x8.5) won't fit, due to the calipers hitting on the bolts of the rim. So, to fix this problem and increase tire sizes to 245 45 17 and 275 40 17, i plan to increase rim width to 8 front and 9.5 (or should i go to 10) in back. Does anyone have experience with this and should i change offsets from the stock 52.3 rear and 55 front. The car ( a 90C2)is about 2.5" lower than stock, and i am running -2.5 degrees of camber
any advice would be great

Andy, you're going to need new wheel centers. No matter what size rim halves you get, the bolts that are hitting will still be in the same location. Changing rim halves will only add more rim to the very outside or very inside, but they still bolt on at the same location on the wheel centers.

Another idea is to get bolts that mount flush. Like the BBS Race wheels where the nut on the back side is actually flush with the surface.

Danno:

thanks. If i step up to Fikse or HRE's the brakes will fit. It is my understanding that the Kenesis wheel center on the Super Cup wheels are actually a center for a 16 inch wheel, and the front and rear half's have an extended lip, to make the 17 inches. Its having the 16 inch bolting pattern which hits the calipers. this seems to be an issue with the Kenesis specifically.

Concerning the offsets, i am seeing offsets of 52mm to 56.7 mm and am wondering if that 4mm makes a difference, (especially with 10" rims or even the 9.5's) when my rim width will be so much greater than stock with a lower car

any help would be great

Andy

The 964 RS which has the 964 turbo calipers fitted to the narrower body uses a 17" rim in 7.5 and 9 widths with a 55 offset front and rear. So your on the money at between 52.5 and 56.7 offset

Standard 17" 993 cup wheels in 7 and 9 widths also have a 55 offset so these should also fit (see picture)

Andy, don't know how much you want to spend on your wheels upgrade. But just adding a 1/4" spacers should help your wheel centers clear the calipers. Then add 1" wider inner halves to your wheels.

As for rim-widths for the 275/40-17, go for 10-11". The tire manufacturers usually specify a rim-width range in their specs for each tire. The wider end of the range will give you less sidewall flex and less lateral movement of the tread under cornering. This will mean crisper turn-in response and higher ultimate grip.

I'm using a 17x11.5" rear rim on BBS Race wheels for a set of Yokohama 275/40-17 tires. It's about 0.5" wider than the high-end of the recommended range, but I get incredible grip with them. Then when I get 1" wider fenders, I'm going to use 315/35-17 tires.

George and danno

thanks. George, I am aware of the stock wheels now (by the way Anderson's book "porsche 911 performance handbook") which i picked up yesterday is awesome in it's content and provided the info on both the stock wheels and the ability to increase sizes on all 911's, but it did not give offsets to accomodate the other vaiables. The 7.5's and 9's won't allow the size tires i want to run, which is too bad. I had another thought of just spacing out the kenesis like Danno said, but the costs of rebuilding the Kenesis will probably be close to the cost of just new wheels, not to mention these Super Cup wheels are cast, not forged, and actually should not be run in a DE/Racing venue, but Danno, it does bring up the thought that for street tires/application could i add the spacers and fix the rims........

Danno;

I'm running 315's on my 88 turbo cab, with an 11 inche rim. Works great!!

Hmmm, I figured that's one of the advantages of going with 3-piece wheels; you can get rim-halves for less than the cost of new wheels. Anyway, Kinesis must be getting high. I bought new inner rim-halves for my HRE wheels at $175 apiece.

Wheel Enhancement quoted $2000 for new halves (need both sides on each wheel to increase rim sizes)

for your info

Can't you use the existing 17x8.5" on the front and upgrade just the 17x7.5" to something like 17x9.0" - 17x10"? Also, there are other dealers for Kinesis that charge way, way less than Wheel Enhancements...
