Weight of factory rims
 

Does anyone have a listing, or can someone point me to a website that lists the weights of factory Porsche rims?

I ask because I wonder just how much heavier they are versus aftermarket rims.

If a list or website doesn’t exist, does anyone know how much the factory Design 90 wheels weigh, and how much the Phone Dial rims weigh?

P.S. If a website doesn't exist, maybe I'll take that on as a project. Sound like a good idea?

Aftermarket wheels are generally much heavier than factory Porsche wheels by as much as 5# or more per wheel. There are some lightweight designs, but not many.

Design 90s are pretty light. I think they are in the 19-20# area for the 7s and 8s normally found on the 944S2. I can probably dig that info out of my vast array of saved messages over the years...

It seems rather comprehensive, so for now, I'll probably just create a link off my site. If I have the time, I may summarize the Porsche-specific info on my site.

I agree that the Phone Dials look a bit dated... so I've set them aside strictly for track events (as did the PO of my car).

Given that info (and your response), it looks like I'll be keeping my Design 90s for now, until I decide to "upgrade" to late-model Porsche rims, or something lighter (and very expensive) like Fikse.

I've been wanting to get a list of factory rim weights together for some time now. I used to have a link to a page that had a few listed, but it's not active anymore, and I didn't copy the info down <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

Anyway, there is a definate variance b/t different wheels of the same type and different scales, as my Turbo S (Club Sports) are a little heavier than those listed above...

Here is what I have so far:


CLUB SPORTS
16x7: 19lbs
16x9: 21.5lbs
16x7 w/225/50 SP8000: 42.5lbs
16x9 w/245/45 SP8000: 46lbs

996 17'S
17x7: 19.07lbs
17x9: 22.26lbs

HOLLOW SPOKES
18x8: 19.95lbs
18x10: 23.36lbs

C2/968 17"
17x7.5: 20lbs
17x9: 23lbs

C2/968 17" (A different set)
17x7.5 w/205/50 P-Zero: 44.6lbs
17x9 w/255/40 P-Zero: 49lbs

I did have the weights of the 16" C2/968 rims w/tires awhile back, but somehow erased the e-mail and didn't copy the info- they WERE LIGHTER than my Club Sports though...

Let me know if you get any others weighed. I have seen weights for the C2 replicas, and they are ~3 - 4lbs heavier. I would REALLY like to get the weight of the narrower hollow spokes- I believe they are 8" & 9"?

As far as I know, the magnesium phone dials only came on the cup cars.

NineFiveOne is right on about the Phone Dials. Plus the normal aluminium Phone Dials only come in 16x7/8" sizes and weigh about 2lbs more than the mag Turbo Cup ones. I heard the magnesium Turbo Cup Phone Dials were horribly expensive at something like $2000 apiece:

Also the wheel weights for the 951 Fuchs wheels are off on that wheel weights website. They actually weigh in at 15 & 16lbs for 16x7 & 16x8" sizes.

The weights I have for the 18" hollow spoke wheels are:

7.5x18, 9200 gr, or 20.26 lb
10x18, 11000 gr, or 24.22 lb

These are supposedly the published weights from PCNA. There is also an 8" front (Turbo) and 9" rear (Boxster) fitment. I don't have those weights, but they will obviously be in between the weights I've given.

Like I had said, I've seen weights of the Club Sports before, that were different from mine, and, have seen many other "slight" discrepancies. Unfortunately, ~2lbs is a fairly large percentage of error when comparing the weights of rims that are in the 20lb range to begin with. I'm not sure why there is so much error, as some of the people list such precise #'s, but w/bathroom sales, it makes a little more sense- maybe some of them have more wheel weights on them, and some may be cleaner than others? :) I'm not sure what effect refinishing would have, unless someone put 5lbs worth of wax on them :D Anyway, this is why I'm trying to get mutiple weights of the same type of wheels, so I can gauge the difference and/or average them together to get a more realistic weight. The Hollow Spoke weights that I listed were sent by Viken in a reply to my post, in this wheel forum, titled: "Hollow spokes, C2's, 993 rims, etc..."

Thanks for adding your #'s to the mix- if you hear of anyone else taking a stab at it, please let me know the results...

You're absolutely right about the Magnesiums, they're lighter and wider, but what is the pinkish-purple discoloration caused by? Anyone?

The weird color on that rim is a paint scheme. The Magnesium Cup rims would turn yellowish over time, either from the magnesium reacting with the paint, or from a combination of the racing pads brake dust and intense heat.
Danno, I only wish the Cup rims were worth half as much today. I'd sell mine right away.

That white & purple paint scheme on the wheels actually matches the paint on the car. I don't remember where I saw a photo of that car (ebay?), but I think it had four wheels that were painted differently to flow with the scheme on the car.
