Red face Geometry question

I have been running my 90 C4 on ContiSport Contacts on the rears (18") after
having a blowout about six months ago, and until now have kept the Michelin
pilot sport on the front.

The steering has been lively - to say the least. I had only had the car
for a couple of weeks before the blowout, so have never really driven the
car without it being damned hard work to keep it straight! I am now going
for the Contis all round - I don't want to get into a discussion about
tyre preferences here - it seems that everyone has their pet shoes for
their baby.

My questions are:

Should I get a full geometry done when I get the tyres changed (it has not
been done for 8 years acording to the paperwork);

And for the UK members - I want to, like John M, use AFN Reading, but the cost is £200 plus vat.

Is this a reasonable fee? Don't laugh, but the AA are offering £33.00
for a full geometry check - I know they are not an OPC, but I would have
thought that the end result was the same!

Please get your geometry checked as soon as possible. If it has not been done for 8 years then surely the alignment must be out, especially as you say the car is difficult to keep in a straight line. Have you noticed abnormal tyre wear? I always make it a practice to get a full geometry check when fitting new tyres as this relatively small expense prolongs the life of your new investment. Another tip-try getting your dealer to put nitrogen in the tyres instead of normal air, you should notice a difference. Can't really comment on the quotes for this work but I suggest you check with other Porsche owners or members of the GB Porsche club for advice in this area.

Brad, it is a good idea to get the wheel alignment done, as well as corner weight weighing, when you change the tyres.

Some companies use a standard whhel alignment technique which for many cars would suffice.

Other specialist companies have computer wheel alignment equipment.

AA sounds like it would be fine for most cars.

For our cars it would be prudent to get it done to a high standard.

AFN sounds expensive.

I got a quote for mine a couple of days ago from Tognola Engineering of Slough at £140 + VAT. Advertised in 911 & Porsche World. I havent used them yet but they advertise to be Porsche specialists.

There are probably a few other adverts in the magazine.
