how not-round is acceptable for track wheels?
 

Oops, posted this to racing, not realizing there was a wheel forum...

I've got the opportunity to purchase a set of wheels at a pretty good price to use with stickies on my 951. The offsets aren't perfect, but can be worked with. When I took what was supposed to be the WORST wheel to the shop yesterday and had it spun on the balancing machine, the inner lip had about 1/4" deflection... not really a dent, more like a non-trueness...
Haven't even seen the other three at this point, wondering if these wheels will be useable and safe for the track?

I wouldn't use them with a 1/4" out of round condition. Think of the stresses put on a tire at the track...would you want one side wavering the sidewall in and out by 1/4"? I seem to recall a spec for straight wheels including a runout with several zero's to the right of the decimal. I'd call Wheel Enhancement or Rennsport in Atlanta or if you have someone local and find out what it costs to straighten the wheel. They may not be such a good deal.

I would never knowingly use a bent wheel...especially at the track. Call me crazy but it kind of defeats the purpose of being there if you arrive with sub-par equipment. Not to mention all the wonderful things that can go wrong if you would have avoided the situation in the first place.

Happen to run across the Porsche maximum lateral runout on light alloy rims = .0315". In the factory manual it also says "Warning: Distorted rims must not be straightened"
