wheels for 944 turbo "S"
I have an 88 turbo s. Several have told me the only wheels I am going to get to fit are the original forged oem. This is due to those huge front brakes and the large offset needed to clear them. Am I getting the right info?

No, that's rediculous. You can fit several types of wheels onto your car. Ask your question on the general board and you will get the answers you are after. Your offset is something like 65mm up front and 60mm in the rear. These are NOT excessive or strange offsets. Check out the Tire Rack at www.tirerack.com
There will have some info for you.

Also ask Robert Wood at Wheel Enhancements. With the prevalence of big red brakes, one probably can no longer consider the Turbo S brakes to be "huge". Most any 16" rims will clear the brakes.

The 17" wheels that came as an option for the 968 would fit. 17x9 in the back (255/40r17) 17x7.5 in the front (225/45r17).
Also. Companies like Fikse, HRE, Forgeline, Kinesis can all get you descent wheels.

Pat,
Take off your rim and look at the backside of the the wheel center. It is usually engraved in the spoke of a Fuchs wheel or cast into the center or outer rim of the cast wheels. Good luck. Yours should say Front: 65 mm Rear 60 mm

I have jacked up the car this weekend
and removed the fronts and the back wheels.
Yup, the offsets are stamped exactly where you guys said. Front offset is 65 and the
rear offset is 60. This means I'm
going to have troubles finding a used set?

Not sure why you would have trouble finding the wheels: I think there are quite a few around.
If you want a set of 7's, 8's or 9's for the track let me know: I have four 7's, four 8's and four 9's. The eights have 55 mm offset, which centers the wheel just as the sevens were. They were originally for the 928 GTS but fit the 944 later years and give the same look to the front wheels that the rear wheels have.

These wheels are going to be for the track
and autoX. Tell me if I am wrong on this:
The offset # pushes the wheel in or out in
relation to the edge of the fender.
How would I know if a given set of wheels will or will not clear the large brakes on the "S" turbo?????

As I noted in my first post, the 944 TS front brakes, although large at the time of their introduction, aren't really large compared to Big Reds or GT2 sized brakes. Any Porsche 16" wheel should clear them easily. In fact, modular (BBS, Kinesis, etc) wheels will clear Big Reds because they don't have as deep a groove to assist with tire mounting.
Again, ask someone like Robert Wood at Wheel Enhancements. He will know about any specific wheel you have in mind.

i've made dozens of sets of wheels for the 944s (in 16-17-18" diameters) and have not had any issues with the brake clearences. what class do you plan on competeing in?

A good friend of mine runs his totally stock Turbo S at DE events in Atlanta with a set of 8" front and 9" rear 928 16" wheels that Julian described. He runs 245 tires at all corners and claims the car is very neutral. No clearance problems.
