Has anyone tried a 275 x 40 x 17
 

I am running a 88 911 narrowbody with a 9 x 17 rear wheel. I am currently running a 255x40x17 and thinking it might handle a 275 x 40 x 17. Has anyone tired it with success or not, please advise. I think the tire and wheel scenario is driving me to the edge!!!

I can't speak for it fitting in the wheel well or not, but it will fit on the wheel itself.

However, there are 2 issues:
The first being that the overall diameter of the 275/40 will be greater than that of the 255/40.

The second being that a 275/40 is really a bit oversize for a 9" wheel. 255 is optimal. <a href="http://www.tirerack.com" target="_blank">http://www.tirerack.com</a> has plenty of info on this. Look up your tire then hit "Specs" It'll have wheel widths for each tire.

Not sure about an '88, but a 275 will fit on a 993 without rubbing. I used a 225/275 combination instead of 205/255 on 7&9 x 17 inch wheels. Understeer was a problem (with Kumho Ecsta's). I stwitched back to the stock 205/255 and went to MPSCs.

Yes it will fit. check your clearance on the passenger side rear. you may have to slightly reroute your oil lines. depends on the offset of your wheels. On my car, a 72 with SC/Carrera flares, I put an 1/8 inch spacer on the rears to move them out toward the fender and have had no rubbing problems.

Yes, it can be fitted, but I would only bother if you are going racing. For a street car it is a major hassle. First you need exactly the right offset, even then, work will need to be done to the lips and trailing arm bolts and oil lines.

In addition a 9" rim is at the small and of the spec range and as a result is not the most desireable.

Then you will want to use at least 235/45 on the front which will involve even more work.

If you are racing then you will need the 235 & 275 or 245 & 275 combo otherwise not.

A really nice headacheless fitment is 225/45x17 front w/ 255/40x17 rear.

I used the 275/40-17 on 9" rear and 245/40-17 on 7.5" for my 930 and it was terrible! There was just too much rubber for the rim. On the track at speed, you felt like you were driving in a hurricane. The car would wiggle and dart all over under breaking. I then went to 235/45-17 on 8.5" and 275/40-17 on 10" rims and it was fine.

Now the problem is that those sizes are disappearing for many R-Compounds. If you're planning on doing this for the track and want to purchase new wheels, think carefully about tire availability.

I'm now moving to 18" for this reason. I'm also goig to use a "Porsche Standard Size" like 996TT size so I know 5 years from now the tires will still be available.

Michelin has recently added a 265/35x17 to their catalog of the Pilot Sport line .

I have also seen references to Michelin 275/35x17 being fitted to 959s

If and when either of these become generally available here they would probably be a very appropriate tire for SC/Carrera rears.

I believe the 275-40x17 is a stock Corvette tire size so street tire availability should not be a problem.
