Post Can anyone beat Tire Rack for prices?

Hi,
I've figured out what I want:
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup (r-compound)
225 x 17" (2)
255 x 17" (2)

Now where to get them?

I can't find anyone on the internet that can beat their prices! Are they really the cheapest?

Thanks.
Erick

I looked around a little for a cheaper price on Potenza S-03s and found none better than Tire Rack. However, TR's price was only slightly better than my local Firestone tire shop. Once I took shipping into account, it was wasn't worth it for me to mail-order the tires.

I checked with ours, and they were lost, as it's not a standard production tire. They did say if I brought in the Michelin stock numbers, though, they might be able to order them.

The Sport Cups are only available from the Tire Rack and from the Michelin race support team. I spoke to a rep at the Sebring race, and they will be at 10 PCA races this year, the next one is Road Atlanta in April.

Since we're on the topic of prices, I've noticed that most 17 and 18 inch tires have come down considerably in price over the past 2 years with the exception of T/A KD's and A008's. Why have these 2 tires not come down in price? Do their prices reflect track performance? Durability?

Try Frank Darquea of "F1 MOTORSPORTS", in Sayreville, NJ. He's always done right by me. Tell him, "Jimmy D. sent you!"

His number is "732-721-9500". Tell him what you're lookin' for, and the price you got from TireRack. I'm confident that he'll beat it. Besides, he does all the famous guys cars here on the NorthEast.

Let us know how it goes.

Having just looked it up, Michelin web site says they are only available through the Tire Rack. Mine arrived Friday. With 4 more track days over the next two weeks, that should finish up the Ecsta's, then on to the Michelin's.

Update...

I just ordered my MPSC's from Discount Tire, who turned out to cost slightly less than Tire Rack. With mounting, balancing, freight, valve stems, and disposal of my old tires, they beat Tire Rack's total price (with a recommended shop doing the install) by a meager $23.... and beat a local "speed shop" by about $150.

Discount tire offered free rotation, rebalancing, and flat repair (same as the speed shop), and promised not to scratch the wheels.

As much as I'd like to support my local speed shop, and feel that they would provide as good or better service, cost is a VERY important requirement for me - I can buy a harness with that $150!

Anyway, for better or worse, that's what I ended up doing!

Viken,
I found some used "996 twist" wheels:

7" x 17" front 996.362.124.00
9" x 17" rear 996.362.128.00

I've ordered the 225 front MPSC's and 255 rears. I'll keep my fingers crossed for no rubbing, and use a spacer if necessary

Thanks to yourself, Bill Gregory and Jeff Curtis for accelerating my learning curve, and making these purchases possible.

April 25th is my first track day in Portland, and I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Don't forget to scrub the tires in before you go hog wild on them....either mount them before the event and put some mileage on them or take it easy on the track for your first session or two.

Bill,
Is this process of scrubbing the equivalent of "heat cycling"?

Erick -

The process of srubbing is not the same as heat cycling.

Scrubbing = removing the mold release that is used to cure (mold) the tires. It is used so that the tire will come out of the mold.

Heat cycling = bringing the tires up to temperature and allowing them to properly cool down. This will prolong the life of the tires.
