Strip and Polish Wheel experience???
 

Hi Porsche Fans:

Has anyone stripped the paint off of 7 slot/flat disc 928 wheels?

Are these the same aluminum alloy and base as the polished aluminum? My
wheels are polished aluminum. Or are these wheels a different substance such as
steel? Or is the finish below the paint a texture that would not polish out
to the look of mine? Or can I just strip them and polish like mine?

I would assume that I use a Kleenstrip aircraft aluminum stripper, then

I was thinking of doing this to my Phone Dials, but not sure about the 928 wheels. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

I understand that he stripped off the paint and used various rouges and a buffing wheel to polish them. He suggested not to clearcoat them but to keep them waxed. I use them as track wheels so they haven't exactly been pampered, but they look OK.

Your question about the type of metal - if they are forged, they are aluminum and should have a smooth finish suitable for polishing. I don't think my wheel guy used sandpaper on mine though.

I was told not to use a paint stripper when refinishing your wheels because as the wheel gets hot it will leach out the stripper and present problems. Media blasting is too rough also. I think good old fashioned elbow grease and various grades of sand paper and polish is the best way to go.

Of course I'm lazy so I don't know what I'd use. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />
