in case anyone is interested, i found a cool article on R1 tires... it's dated 1996 (which tells me that new ones don't exist yet) but it has lots of really useful information like shaving, tire pressure and tire temperatures.

Default New BFG R-1's

There is a new BFG R-1 that will be released at SEMA later this year. My sources have told me it will have improved life compaired to Hosiers (close to a Pilot Sport Cup which I have seen 40 Heat Cycles before they went off, compaired to 8-12 for a Hosier) and be comptitive/faster than the Hosiers. Should be a great alternative. It will be good to see BFG back in the road racing game!

I heard the same thing from a buddy of mine that works at BFG. I guess we'll have to see if its true at SEMA this year. But if its true........I'll be the first one in line to buy a set.

not sure about the SEMA thing...well find out next week but this tire is going to rock!!! Its faster than the Hoosier, lasts longer, and is targeted to be less expensive. It won't last as long as an MPSC but much longer than a Hoosier and it'll be fast through a wider range of heat cycles so it'll be fast all weekend and won't go away in an Enduro. They've put a lot of time and effort into this tire.

The faster lap times are being measured in seconds not tenths.

Nice!
Looks like i'm going to be in Vegas too so I'm definitely going to be dropping in on Sema this year. Can't wait to see what's new. Hopefully they'll be taking orders for the R1!!!!

I have seen them and we will likely carry them in the spring, but have no other info at this time. I will post as I get it. Stay tuned.

I hope BFG choses to put out an aggressive tire to compete with the R6 and V710. I don't think you can get a long lasting tire that has more grip than the R6. We'll see of course.

if the rumors are true it will be superior to the R6 in every fashion; price, lap times, longevity.

They have major egg on their face from the failed g-Force R1, they know it and hopefully are making the new tire with this in mind.

These guys have much deeper resources than Hoosier and as long as they get corporate support they can pull it off.

I know I'm not buying any new DOT-R's until this one comes out.

Thought i'd check out the bfg site since it's been awhile and came across a couple of interesting things. 1) they have some pretty cool pictures from Sema including one that is a Mustang equipped with R1s (very sweet - take a look at it) and 2) the R1s are now listed in their list of tires. so i'm guessing the R1 is now available! cool.

Spoke with customer service at BFG today and they said to expect them around February/March.

They also said that 265/35/18 size were going to be available, along with the 225/40/18 and 285/30/18.

They mentioned some 17" sizes, too, but I've got 18's so I didn't listen carefully to the sizes that were mentioned.

A buddy of mine just called me from Greenville to talk about these. He said they are faster than Hoosiers in testing. No, I don't have hard data. I asked about available sizes, but he only knew about the 18's listed above and some 17's for his vette 275/40 and 315/35 that he is supposed to have for the NASA VIR event in Feb. I told him I want 255/40's and 275/40's please =)

Considering that these tires are moulded with only 4/32's tread, I don't think they are intended for long life. I also don't expect them to be road racing tires either. The original BFG Comp T/A R1 was strictly an Auto-X tire. Will they have a longer life than Hoosiers? Anything has more life than Hoosiers. I have seen people go through a set in a single 2-day national event. That is only 6-8 runs on them.

Not sure that 4/32s indicates short life, the Toyo RA-1s are recommended to be shaved to 4/32 and are known for a very long life.
