At the moment I can not afford to replace all 4 tires, it is a euro car, put larger rims, with lower profile tires... approx same height/ wheel well clearance as orig. what is the appropriate rim width to tire width ratio?

It somewhat depends on the tire construction. Some stiffer-walled tires are only
good for a narrow wheel width range. See the tire specs for tires listed
at www.tirerack.com, to look for recommended rim widths. Alaways look
up the individual tire manufacturer's recommendation. Two vendor's tires
of the same 'spec' (eg: 245/45-16) may differ significantly in every dimension.
I have even seen two such tires differ *from the same manufacturer*. They
were merely different tire models and their diameters differed by > .25".

On a 77, if you're going to stick with 205' up front, I'd normally want to use 225's in back, which is what Porsche shipped with the 16" option on 911SC's. However, 16x9's work really nicely with 245's in back. Having a comparatively skinny tire up front may yield some under steer with larger tires in back. For safe and consistent handling, you should have the same brand of tires all the way around.
