Yokohama AVS ES 100's -- What to expect?
I need to replace my badly worn Bridgestone Potenza S02's so I swung by the tire store today and got a quote on the newest rave on performance tires, the Yokohama AVS ES100. I've read some good reviews and plus my good friend just got a set put on his BMW and loves the grip way more than his previous Kumho Ectsa Supra's. He also said they have ALOT of road noise, but I already have plenty in my 944 anyway so its no problem there for me, but the salesman said to expect about 30k miles out of them. Is this true for anyone here who have ran with them already? The reason I'm so interested right now is because my friend picked up his set literally two days ago and payed $775 total including mount+balancing, and today I got a quote for $580 installed and balanced!!! Apparently there is a big sale on these tires right now so I went ahead and put a deposit down and they're ordering them for me this weekend. Any opinions appreciated!

I've now had several sets on both my daily driver and on my DE car and I really like the grip. The idewalls are not super firm, but offer good turnin. They will feel very odd and slippery for the first 3-500 miles, but then one day the grip and consistancy of the grip lock in and they are great. Best tire for the price, bar none...

I have them on my 190E daily driver on 16" SLK wheels... Great bang of the buck. They won't compare to your S02s though... Think of yout current tire as Porsche spec and the Yoks as Mustang spec. Hope this helps!

I did a lot of looking when replacing my Michelin Pilot sports on my 88 Carrera. I found a very good replacement tire from tire rack. They are Cooper Avon's and have proven to be much better than the Michelins. The Pilot's were very slippery in the wet, but the Avon's have not broken loose yet. The ride is as good as the Yoko Es100's, but are much quiter. I went to Discount Tire here in San Antonio and they got the tires from tire rack so I wouldn't have to wait for delivery. I paid approx $90 each plus tax, mounting and balancing, and road hazard guarantee. The total was less than $500 for the set (2-205x55x16 and 2-225x50x16. In my 38 years of driving Porsches, these tires are great and very quiet. By going through discount tire, they gave me a better deal since my warranty is through them and I don't have to pay shipping to and from tire Rack in case I have a bad tire. Not a testimonial, just satisfied customer. Check out Tire Rack for specs, surveys, and other data.

the ES100s are a jack of all trades/ace of none type of tyre. they are good; they arent crap and dont excel in any one category. BUT, even though they are inexpensive relative to, say, an S-03 or PS2, i do have to say that they are overpriced for how much performance they offer, IMHO. i.e. there are better tires for the $. just to name a few:
- Kumho MX
- Falken GRB FK-451
- Bridgestone Potenza RE-750
- Toyo T1-S (a bit more $ but a lot more perf)
- Dunlop super sport race (R compound, but very inexpensive and can be a daily driven tyre)
but of course it all depends on what you want out of a tire: dry grip, wet grip, steering response, ride comfort, noise, treadwear. theres a good tire for everyone.
i ran the ES100 on my other car (03 wrx) and have compared it to the RE-92, RE-040, RE-070, T1-S, and GRB FK451. other than the RE-92 being utter crap (oem all season, what can i say), the ES100 was the next worse tire, albeit potenza and toyo are in another league, but the falken still blows the ES100s outta the water, and for ~$40 less per tire!

I just purchased tires for my 951, and did a bit of research before the purchase. I ended up with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 and REALLY like them. They have a similar tread design to the AVS. At TireRack.com, there is a consumer review at the bottom of the page for each tire you wish to consider. Only 3 display initially, but click on the bottom section "Read all reviews" for a comprehensive list. I normally put more stock into a write-up from someone with a HP type car. These Goodyear's have rave reviews.

Ironically, these tires are made in Germany too.

Apples to oranges, but the ES-100s I have on our non-P car are totally quiet, brake well, but squeal a lot in corners. I have RE750s on the front of my Boxster and S-03s on the rear, and I was really surprised that the RE750s in the front can keep up so well with the rear. I was actually looking to increase understeer slightly and improve the ride, but actually the handling balance was unchanged or at most maybe 0.01G difference worth. I have a modified suspension, but I can pull 1G+ in either braking or cornering on my RE750/S-03 setup. RE750s are not shabby tires. There's no way I could do this with my OE Continentals or PZeros. IMHO, the RE750 is a better "summer" tire than the ES-100s which are quieter and more rain oriented.

I'm going to toss in another vote for the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3. I just put them on my 87 coupe and "wow"! Incredible grip, fairly low noise (at least compared to the S02s I had on before) and much better in the wet. Very happy so far.
