Default New Wheels & Tire pressure question...

I just got my 17" Cup 2's refinished- they look brand new! I HAD Dunlop SP8000's on 16" CS's- 225/50 & 245/45- I JUST got new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's for my Cup 2's- 225/45/17 & 255/40/17- the profile is OBVIOULSY shorter than the Dulops, BUT, the sidewalls feel weaker- this REALLY surprises me- Porsche recommends 36psi front AND rear- I always kept my SP8000's at 35psi- the Pilots, at 36psi felt really wiggly- like the car was a boat or something- I ran the pressure up to 38psi & it feels a little better- I also noticed that the SP's had a MAX pressure 40psi & the Pilots show 51psi- should I be running the Pilots higher? Does max pressure have anything to do w/it? Maybe 40psi? What do other's here run? Especially those of you w/Pilots? Do Pilots need more presure than most other tires? I ALSO noticed the Pilot's are narrower than the SP8000's- this was rather upsetting- the 225 Dunlop was wider than the 225 Pilot & the 245 Dunlop was a hair wider than the 255 Pilot.... oh well- too late now... Starting to wish I'd bought S03's, but.... any input? Sorry for X-posting, but, I really need some quick input & would like as many responses as possible....

BTW- for those of you who are curious about weight-
16x7 Club Sport w/NEW 225/50 Dunlop SP8000- 42.5lbs
16X9 Club Sport w/NEW 245/45 Dunlop SP8000- 46.0lbs

17x7 Cup 2 w/NEW 225/45 Pilot Sport PS2- 40.6lbs
17x9 Cup 2 w/NEW 255/40 Pilot Sport PS2- 45.8lbs

SO, I actually LOST a TINY bit of weight going to the 17's

Now, IF only I had enough $ for some Fikses- I could get a 17x8 front w/245/40/17 & an 18x10 rear w/275/35/18 I could save another 2-3lbs per corner & fill out that rear wheel well completely...

Anyway, any input on tire pressures? I think another 2-3lbs would make the tires feel right, BUT, am afraid I might be wearing out the middles & really want the tires to work as well as possible, plus, get as much life out of them as possible, considering their price...

Thanks a lot...

The wheel/tire weights are kind of interesting. I hate the thought of losing acceleration when going to a larger wheel size due to the unsprung weight increase. Are you selling the Club Sports?

Don't set tire-pressure for "feel". Set tire-pressure for maximum-performance. That means setting it for even temperatures across the tread for maximum grip. Use a pyrometer. Use shock-adjustments for fine-tuning "feel".

I am pretty fanatic about weight- I HATE the idea of adding a pound if I don't ABSOLUTELY HAVE too- The final weight of the 17" Cup 2's w/new Pilot Sport PS2's (225/45 & 255/40) was w/in 1lb each of the 16" Club Sports w/new Dunlop SP8000's (225/50 & 245/45)- the Cup 2 fronts are a HAIR lighter & the rears a HAIR heavier- I don't notice a damn thing & I'm a picky bastard The other effect is, that a taller RD will slow you down a hair too, BUT, a Turbo S 245/45/16 is 24.68" & a 255/40/17 is 25.03"- I can't tell a BIT of diff in any way.... OF course, you have to remember that all the tire sizes are full of sh**! The Dunlop 245 was as wide as the Pilot 255- the 225 was wider than the Pilot 225- I checked them thouroghly w/my tire guy watching- that stuff just is NOT perfect.... Kind of annoyying actually...

Anyway, I am considering selling my Club Sports- I really like them- if they only made them in 17" or 18"- the look is about my favorite for these cars- I had mine refinished a few years ago- they're still in great condition, w/no curb rash, except for one rear- it's a section less than one inch long in two places- about as mild of curb rash as can be found... I was thinking of asking $600 for the set, b/c I DO like them, BUT, I doubt CS's would bring that much used- they'll probably just collect dust unless I ever sold the car to buy ANOTHER 951- in any case, I couldn't see taking less than ~$500- if you're intersted in that range, let me know- I can clean them up in the next week or so & take a few pics, etc- they're at my parents house, so, are ~30 miles away- I just wish Porsche had made forged more of their wheels like the Club Sports...
