Question Replace both tires??

I recently had the "pleasure" of running over a nail in my left rear tire. I have a 2003 911 C4 with only about 3400 miles on the car.

According to the tire place (dealer recommended), they could not patch the hole (which was fine with me), but said I needed to replace both rear tires. Does this sound correct? They also said the rear tires only last about 6000 - 8000 miles, which seemed on the low side.

With only 3400 miles, I'd replace only the one tire.

IMHO

How much of the tread on the other tire is gone? If it's half gone or more, I'd get two new tires. If it's only worn down 2/32, I'd just get one tire. You could also get just one new tire and have it shaved down to the tread depth of the other tire. The thing the tire place has in mind is that the tread depths of the two tires on the same axle shouldn't be too different, but, considering that they sell tires, their threshold for being "too different" may be lower than most peoples'. The other consideration they might mention is that the rubber on your old tire might be a little harder and less flexible than the rubber on your new tire. If there is 3 or 4 years difference in age, this could also provide a somewhat strange feel in handling. But with only 3400 miles on your tires, I'd guess they are relatively fresh rubber, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Actually, since it is AWD, I would be SHOCKED if they allowed you to get just one. Variance is tread depth over 2/32ns of an inch has been known to cause failure to differentials/transfer cases in Subarus/Audis/4WD Pickups, etc.

By replacing one tire they are accepting responsibilty for any damage to the AWD setup. To be honest, if they are worn half way they should be almost demanding that you replace ALL of the tires.

I'm with Jim and 930Rocket - just replace the one tire. On tire wear, 911's typically wear out tires at 2X in the rear, that is, you'll go through 2 sets of rears to each set of fronts. Of course the brand/model of tire influences wear length, as does the drivers right foot!
