Need help finding wheels to fit an 86 944 Turbo with Big Reds(for rain)
I've currently got a set of 18x9 and 18x10 CCW wheels on the car now. I'm looking to pick up a set of wheels that I can use for rain tires. From all that I've read I can't use a wheel smaller than 17" or else they will rub on the big reds. The 86 has the early offset, so I can't use any current wheels. Am I stuck with another custom set?
Also, does anyone have an opinion as to what wheel/tire sizes to run in the rain?

Ken,
You responded to my little brother (Driv300mph) about my new purchase last week. 1986 951. By your post, I think you can help me. What the heck do I need to do to find 17" wheels x 10" that will fit???? You mentioned custom in your post. Is that our only option. I too want the big red upgrade eventually. What did CCW charge you for the wheels? What can we do so later model wheels will fit our cars besides spacers?
Being new to the 951 enthusiasm......your car seems really prepped. Might I ask you what you did......turbo? MAF? etc...... My car is currently sitting with Lindsey Racing awaiting upgrades. I submitted post earlier. Look forward to hearing from you. Andy.

Ok, the wheels were on the car when I bought it(only a few weeks ago). The previous owner said he paid around $1700 or so a few years ago. It looks like the current price for the wheels comes in around $1800. The website for these guys is www.ccwheel.com .
The tires that are currently on there are 245 fronts and 275 rears. There's evidence of rubbing on the front of the car which the PO said was due to trying to run 255s in the front. He said that most people suggest running 275s in the rear so that's what he went with. It looks like 285s might fit, but it's getting close and the fenders might need to be rolled. I'll try and find the profile for the tires tonight as I don't know them off the top of my head.
Andy, I'm putting together a website about the car and whatnot. You can checkout this page to see all the modifications to it(It's under "The Cars" section)

Regarding what you need to do to get the wheels to properly fit, is to determine the correct offset and backspacing. If you contact places like complete custom wheels, fiske, or kinesis, I'm sure that have the data to make the wheels correctly fit. If you do some searches of the main 944 board and the 944 Turbo board, there have been lots of discussions in the past about all this. I wish I knew the info, but I can't give you exact numbers. I can point you in the right direction though. Check out this site, specifically under the "Sizus Maximus" section:

There's a discussion of wheel offsets and how to fit large wheels on 944s. Read all the articles under the wheels section.
I saw the other post in the Turbo section about this. The people who are recommending swap out the hubs and whatnot from a later car are correct. But I think this is alot of work just to get late offset wheels to work. There are not many options for the early offset(86 and earlier 944s) cars for 17" wheels. They are basically all custom. The early offset cars had a 23.5mm offset, whereas the later cars(87 and later) have and offset of 56mm. This basically means that the late wheels won't bolt up without spacers. While spacers will work, they are really not suggested for a track car that will see extended periods of time at high loads. In fact, many clubs won't let you run on the track with spacers. So basically our only option is new custom wheels from $2-4k, or maybe find a used pair for less.
I hope that answers some questions.
