Thanks so much Karl for (re)starting this thread!

I'm not going to list a drive yet (although I know of a few details that haven't been mentioned..I'll outline them when time permits!) and instead for now, I'll just mention that it seems like LEO has stepped up revenue generation activities in West Marin, so use due situational prudence.

They are sitting in many of the usual locations (San Geronimo Valley, Nicasio Res, Novato Blvd, Lucas Valley Rd E of the Estates). I think that the sheriffs are using a K band frequency (instant on?) which many of us have locked out but we probably should run with K on these days.

CHP is also active (new guy on the block) and is still using KA band; CHP motorcycles have also been spotted stationary/rolling in the most unlikely places so the CHP seemingly is also stepping up their revenue activities (which I believe is all due to a newly elected county supervisor who knows that the man has been leaving a bunch of revenue on the table...but I digress...)

PS Lucas Valley is best run E>W, at least until the W>E lane gets some (re)surface loving...

Wish I'd have checked this thread before the weekend, I just camped out in Olema with my son in the 996. However had lots of drama with it breaking down and almost needing a tow home.

No, I wasn't referring to you, but rather the thread in general. Though in this Interweb age, there really are no more 'secret' roads anymore. The only real valuable information at this point is time of day relative to traffic flows. Luckily it's not as simple as 'get out there early', as there are various days/times where certain roads are much more likely to be clear.

Honestly, if you want to find some great California roads, just check out the moto touring site Pashnit.com. One stop shop for info on every good road in the State.

Assuming you mean Skyline in the SC mountains, it's because it's not a great driving road, particularly for motos. It's a road you use to get to some good roads, not a destination itself.

Yup, that's the one.

But interestingly I think Skyline's actually a pretty good (though not brilliant) driving road, like Hwy-84 to the coast (which they don't list either).

Presumably Moto criteria steers in a different direction than what I listed in the top post. I've seen them use the term "goaty" when characterizing some of the roads.

Well 84 from Skyline to the coast is probably one of the best roads in the area, if caught at the right time and if free of SMC Sheriff presence. IMO 35 is mostly a yawner, though I find the section north of 84 up to 92 to be the more enjoyable section to drive, particularly later in the afternoon. The pavement sucks though, and you need to be super careful due to both the bicyclists on this road and the cars that emerge without looking from many of the hiking parking areas.

Honestly, most of the roads in the SC mountains, save a few stretches really aren't great car driving roads. There are a lot more good motorcycling roads there than sports car roads.

Pashnit runs longer tours, so they probably don't cover one or two short roads.

PSA to those unfamiliar: McKean/Uvas/Watsonville road be very smart about your pace. There is often sheriff presence on that road and, aside from not getting a ticket yourself, the last thing we all need is more enforcement there because too many people are playing ricky racer. It's a nice road to keep a decent pace down without going crazy. Also, warning to be careful of your sightlines and passes on that road, as it has numerous spots that can be very deceiving as to how much room you have.
