How do you 200 cel guys deal with CA emissions?
 

How do you do it?

Did you try and fail the test already? I'm curious as I am about to install a Europipe although I think my next smog won't be till 2016. I had not heard of anyone having trouble with smog on the countless exhaust threads.

Don't know about any other models, but my 993 passed with fabspeed 200 cell cats no problem. Still very clean. This was, however, on a 95 model, so OBD 1. Tech didn't recognize something different or I would have failed visual.

FD Motorsports 200-cell inserts in the stock housings on the 993TT.... Passes like a champ!

200 cell cats will pass the sniffer if other parts are doing their job. i've ran them in different cars for years in cali and haven't had issues passing

There were recent changes in CA. Sniffer test no longer being performed. They are just checking the ODBC for error codes.

This is in effect already. My mechanic over at Alekshop bought a new BMW 4 series from out of state and had to have it smog tested. They just hooked it up to the ODBC and bam he was done. He also had it modded for the track and it still passed!

interesting. i'm assuming this only applies to car newer than 4 years old? older cars still need to pass the sniffer? i had just done mine today on the new 964

also learned that cars older than 2000 will need to go to what they now call a "Star Certified" station. anyways, probably doesn't apply to most of you guys with newer cars.

It's suppose to be cars that are 2000 and newer that don't require the sniffer test.

I passed the sniffer last year with 100 cell cats in San Diego. No more dyno runs apparently, but they still hooked the gas analyzer to the tailpipe. I don't have the papers with me, but the numbers looked very very good. Just make sure the cats are nice and hot.
The loading (how much and what kinds of precious metals) of the cat has a lot to do with the reaction rates. It's been proven on dynos that high performance cats can meet and exceed OEM emissions standards through more aggressive loading. The only reason we don't have CARB approved 100-200 cell cats for California is ignorance, there are certain people working at CARB that can't fathom how some modifications can yield both performance AND efficiency... these are the same people that will allow us to buy a 6.3 liter AMG Mercedes but not a 1.4 liter Bluemotion Golf.

My car has 200c cats from Fabspeed (38k miles, incl 5-6k DE miles), Remus mufflers and FVD tune.

I flash the DME back to factory tune, but kept the high flow cats see if the cats will trigger CEL. And within 5 miles of driving, the CEL came on with cat efficiency out of range. So, I ended up swapping the factory header back on, along with factory tune. CEL went away. No surprise; ODB2 & visual passed.

As a science experiment, I put the high flow cats back, kept the factory tune, but changed the 5yr old/38k miles spark plugs for a new set. Drove around and no CEL. So, I believe this setup will pass ODB2 - no CEL. The unknown is whether the cats will pass visual, which is still a requirement in CA for smog testing.

YMMY, but if you have CEL with 200c cats, you may want to check condition/age of the plugs.
