Usually just go where is most convenient. Shops are largely the same with an attitude difference here and there from the staff.

buy a condo in florida, register the car there. Problem solved.

Smog checks are very generic. Any shop will do and they are all within a few bucks of one another. If you need a STAR Certified test, you need to go to a STAR Certified shop. Your DMV paperwork will tell you that if its required.

This. Unless you're looking for a under the table type of smog.. that's a different story.

Have an out of state car that I need to register and seeing if anyone knows a smog place that is familiar with Porsches - any Porsche dealers that have their own smog stations?

Familiarity with Porsches is irrelevant. From the smog tech point of view, its a car like every other one. They will plug into the car via the OBD2 port, confirm readiness monitors are set and other system checks... along with a visual inspection of a few things. It's not rocket science... and should be done in 10-15 min.

Okay thanks - just had a lot of trouble with a previous out of state car to pass smog. Will take it to one in Westwood or Culver City.

If the car is stock and the battery hasn't been replaced or disconnected in some time, you should be good to go.

At the "Smog Check" level the procedure for all 1996 and newer cars is identical. Neither the business or the technician performing the work have any flexibility. Pick whatever station is convenient to you,
Now . . . . if you've done any modifications to the car . . . . .the best solution can often be to sell the car before you move here. Restoring an emissions system or the electronics that run the vehicle can get incredibly expensive very, very fast.

2000 and newer. 96-99 still require the old smog testing where we check emissions and run the car on the dyno.

I might have to take one of my cars to you since it has a crazy clutch and bucket seats so the local smog shops don't want to deal with it.
