From FL 1st time visiting Reno/ N. Lake Tahoe looking for scenic twisties
Hi all, I will be traveling from FL to Reno for a work trip and have some free time. In this free time I wanted to soak up some scenery behind the wheel on some of the local twistIes. I tried to find a 911/ Boxer/Cayman on Turo but ended up renting an Alpha Romeo 4C. I will venture down to the north end of Lake Tahoe - Incline village area on Mount Rose Hwy (SR 431) which looks like it will be fantastic. Any other recommendations for great scenic driving? Any cool interesting driving destinations are welcome.
Thanks! |
Hi Scalp-em, glad to see you have time for some local roads. I have lived here for 20 years and enjoy the roads in the Porsche and on motorcycles so I know most of the roads pretty well.
First off, avoid Mt Rose highway, way too much traffic to Incline and zero places to pass. You invariably end up behind a f*&($##g Prius at 25 miles an hour. Here are a couple of my favorite trips, figure 4-5 hrs each max Hwy 49 Downieville and back https://maps.roadtrippers.com/?a3=t!...opy&z=10.35315 Hwy 49 is a classic and great in a Porsche. Hwy 89 Monitor pass and back. Go to Edgewood golf course right on Lake Tahoe for lunch after and then back to Reno over Hwy 50. https://maps.roadtrippers.com/?a3=t!...opy&z=10.19577 Monitor is rated one of the best 10 roads in CA, on Butler Maps. After Markleeville turn left onto Monitor and go all the way over to 395. I usually turn around and go back the other way to Markleeville, its addicting and there are some sections where you can reach unreasonable speeds(if you like) Coming from Florida this will give you some seriously twisty roads to enjoy which you may not get over there. I use the Roadttrippers app so you should be able to load these maps. Enjoy the twisties in your Porsche or Ducati. The Sierra Nevada Mountains offer loss of great roads. Enjoy |

I lived outside of Sutter Creek California for many years. My recommendation(s) would be almost any road bordered by: West of Lake Tahoe, East of and including CA-49, combined with anything North or South of I-80.
