New 2019 sound law in California
It’s officially started ...

goin2drt 01-06-2019 11:16 AM

It's Kalifornia, good luck. It has nothing to do with sideshows. It has EVERYTHING to do with the people running that state. It will only get worse with the new governor.

I'm not sure there is anything "new" here as existing state law already has a db limit on exhaust systems that OEM mfgrs have to consider when selling cars in CA or elsewhere (95 db I believe).

Citations and stricter enforcement may have become more expensive however. Of course, a smog station with a careful eye can fail your car if it is determined that the exhaust is not OEM. Cats (e.g. 200 cell) that do not have a CA certified tag attached is an automatic fail.
Before a recertification, some pull their aftermarket exhaust and reinstall stock to get a recertification.
Bikers seem to ignore this as many have open exhausts that are way behind 100 db.
Feel free to chime in with corrections........

Yes it is new. See for example

what was a “correctable” ticket is now a mandatory fine and court date plus referral progr inspection. All new for 2019. More $ to CA.

And this new referral program inspection is no joke. Go follow Alex Choi and what he is doing to his Lambo because a well known d#$khead BHPD couldn't give him speeding tickets or traffic violations so he nailed him with this new inspection deal. They don't just look for exhaust, you have to basically turn your car back 100% to stock as they will check for EVERYTHING, too include front license plate, window tint etc etc. Yes it is a money grab for the state, as usual. Have to fund the cell phones for the illegals since the texting tax didn't pass.

^^^I'm not defending the BHPD for their actions, but that little weenie Alex Choi and his YouTube buddies really pushed the cops into doing something. He pretty much kept f**king with them by shooting flames with his fart canons until something had to be done.

I'm setting a goal to have a property someplace out of Kalifornia to register my car before it comes due again in ~18 mos...not sure I will make it tho. This is early evidence the 'involuntary wealth transfer' process will accelerate under the new regime.

well, if it gets those hondas, subarus etc with those really obnoxious fart cans off the road , not so bad.

Of course, exhaust db level is arbitrary until measured at a referral program inspection. Cops will cite based on what they "think" is excessive db level. There are criteria established for a proper measurement in a specific environment as listed by the state. Maybe now, local muffler shops may create such a setup in order to stay in business..........

It's more BS from Kalifornia typically, POS state that just keeps trying to find ways to steal money from people living here. You'll probably have exhaust Manufacturer's gonna fight this soon or changing ways like having stamps on their exhausts to show certification of under decibel limits and is equal at OEM replacement. It's all a legal extorsion by Kalifornia, if you want to keep your performance exhaust you would have to go to a state referee, have them provide you a "Certificate of Compliance" ( At cost of course ). FN Commie state, can't wait to get out of this **** hole.

Just like the idiots who voted for increasing bridge tolls a dollar extra for the next 3 years, that's supposed to help with bay area road work, total BS as the gas tax and registration tax they implemented previously haven't done squat to repair roads in California and worst in Bay area full of potholes and crap. The money from those 3 programs goes to a general fund in which any politician can take money from. LOL. That bridge hike will just go to that general fund as well. Still waiting for California to fix the ****ty roads we have in the Bay Area.

Wonder if SEMA will fight this?

Does this affect those harley davidson bikes with open really loud exhausts?

of course not, those things can still ring you at 130 db

California law requires that all vehicles must be equipped with an adequate muffler to prevent excessive noise from the exhaust system. It also prohibits the operation of a passenger vehicle (other than a motorcycle), or a truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 6,000 pounds, that has an exhaust noise level greater than 95 decibels, when tested under specified conditions. I should buy a Harley and just rev the fuk out of it everywhere.

mcomet 01-08-2019 11:39 AM

That is the bar info for noise. However my understanding is the new “law” is in fact applicable to both cars and motorcycles now for 2019. It’s a non corrective fine. Period. You get cited you have to pay. Unless you also get the check mark from the cop to say you have to go to the ca BAR to get inspected. In that case if shown to be compliant then the citation is dropped. Check the first part of the DDE video below. Out of state car so can’t get ticketed anyhow. One of the comments on the video comment area states there is a 72 hour timeline to get inspected. Not sure if that is true. But it is totally arbitrary and up to the cop to decide either no ticket, or yes ticket and fee, or yes ticket and fee and have to go to inspection as well. See images attached also.
