Up for sale is my 2002 996 C4S. I’m gonna start by saying, if you are looking for a showroom example do us both a favor and just stop reading now, this way we can avoid any unpleasant exchanges regarding the car listed. Frankly the idea of buying an older car with really low miles scares the crap out of me, but I guess I’m a different breed. I don’t trust a man that doesn’t drive his car as it’s meant to be driven.
If you’re still reading I can assume you have an interest in a thirteen year old 996 C4S. Good, I have one, and it’s for sale. I will waste the next 5-10 minutes of your time giving you the back story on said C4S, and a little about myself. (I will send pics of what ever you want to see through email.)
My name is Mickey. I like Porsches. I’ve owned a few over the years. I drive them. I don’t park them in the garage. I don’t sip starbucks and chat about the carbon fiber cold air intake I put on to make it look cool (this car has a little carbon fiber on the interior but in my defense it was on the car when I bought it). I drive my cars in all kinds of weather. They have small imperfections. I don’t care about said imperfections. I am a freak about maintenance. I change the oil in my car every 3,000 miles religiously. If something is wrong or broken I fix it immediately. I do some of the work myself, some I leave to a very competent mechanic friend of mine. No, he is not a “Well known Porsche Specialist”, but he is a good mechanic and I trust him with all my cars, Porsche and otherwise. Yes, you are welcome to speak with him.
I LOVE Porsches, I have since I was a kid. I HATE selling them. Not for sentimental reasons (but in full disclosure I will admit to feeling sad after selling a few), but because I don’t like dealing with potential buyers. I get it; you want the best car you can get for the least you can get it for. But in all honesty if you’re picking over a $20,000-$30,000, ten to fifteen year old car like a Concourse De Elegance judge, you probably shouldn’t be looking at these cars…..well, not in this price range.
Anyway, on to the car….
I am the third owner. I have ALL service records with the exception of a few oil changes I did myself so you’ll just have to trust me on those. The car is in good shape inside and out. There are some signs of wear and tear which I will list in a moment but I will cover the big stuff now. It has 91,000+ miles. No, it’s not high mileage, its 7,000 mile a year. I don’t believe, in any sensible world, that 7,000 miles is considered a lot of miles driven over the course of a year. That said, there may be some “Porsche Enthusiast Handbook” that states otherwise, but I haven’t read it so I don’t prescribe to it. The engine was replaced, under warranty, by the factory, at 41, 846 miles, which means the chassis has 91,000 miles and the engine has around 50,000, so put that in your “high mileage” pipe and smoke it.
No. The IMS HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED WITH LN BEARING. If and when I were to replace the clutch I would consider doing it, but only for resale value, I refuse to drive the car worrying about getting struck by lightning either, but I like to live on the edge.
The only modifications done were lowering it 1” with H&R springs because I hate that such a beautiful car sits up so high. (The original springs come with the car.)
Now to the wear and tear….. The paint is “ok”. I say that because there are a few nicks and scratches here and there (I’m sure a good detailer could make it all pretty nice nice). One ding over the left rear tail light that some a$$hole at work did but of course didn’t leave a note, and lord knows what or how it occurred being that it’s in such an odd place. The front bumper has a few dings as well, and the back has some weird spider cracks that I never notice until I chamois after washing. There is an odd paint spot on the hood that has to be seen at a certain angle (was there when I bought it). And a chip in the windshield that had been repaired (again, there when I bought it). Also, I’d replace the front lip because the current one is a little ratty. I’ll get around to that if I keep the car. Needs rear tires which I will replace before delivering. I had the wheels refinished a few years back, to the tune of $1,000 because I actually had to replace one (it had a badly repaired crack in it that was discovered when we took the tires off). Unfortunately the wide *** on the car, and my occasional rush to parallel park, has led me to scuff both back wheels but they aren’t too bad and could probably be cleaned up by a good detailer.
Interior is also “ok”. The little plastic guard around the ignition is cracked. The plastic coating on the carbon fiber on the steering wheel is cracked in a few places (never liked the wheel much and was planning on replacing it with a plain black leather but just never got around to it). And the driver seat has the usual wear on the side bolster from getting in and out. The auto dimmer in the rear view mirror went all weird and splotchy so it doesn’t dim anymore (that I kinda miss). None of these things ever bothered me to the point of addressing them because I don’t care if there are a few imperfections in the aesthetics of my car, as long as it drives and handles the way it should, I’m happy. This car does.
Why am I selling? Well, this is the first water cooled Porsche I’ve owned. I had a temporary lapse and thought I’d sell my SC and get a “sensible” car. It boils down to, I like air cooled. At the risk of sounding like I’m “over selling”, this car is just too fast for my uses. I have two kids and 3 businesses so basically all I’m doing is driving them to and from school and me to and from work, so basically the car is wasted on me. Yes, I do get the occasional nice drive here and there but I like driving my cars and I can’t drive this car in its comfort zone, well not without endangering people and pissing my wife off with another speeding ticket. I enjoyed the more basic, slower, characteristics of my 911SC. So, if I sell this car, I’ll buy another air cooled car, kinda diggin the idea of a 912 long hood hot rod. In all honesty, I keep buying everything but a long hood and it’s the one car I’ve wanted more than any so it’s time.
I don’t “need” to sell this car but I do like to work on my cars and tinker…this car doesn’t lend itself to much of that. I actually found myself looking at ways to tweak it like a little aero work, maybe a lightened flywheel, short shifter, IPD plenum, PSS10 suspension, etc…. and caught myself being an idiot. The last thing this car needs, for my uses, is more potential. So do us both a favor and save this car from me. If I don’t sell it I’ll “hot rod” it and endanger people and **** my wife off.
The car is listed at a reasonable $23,500. If I were to fix everything to “perfect” I’d list the car for a higher price to reflect that, but since I have no issues with the few aesthetic imperfections I won’t waste the money. Lucky for you, if you buy the car, you get to do a little work to it and make it your own. I'm FIRM on the price. Please, lets not waste each others time if you aren't serious. And PLEASE PLEASE don't contact me if you aren't in a position to pay, now.
I’m just guessing at the below repair costs based on a quick search and past experience.
Front Lip = $200
Ding (paintless dent repair) = $200
Rearview mirror = $200
Refinish rear wheels = $300
Key Guard = $75
Professional Detail = $300
Steering wheel = you’re on your own
Seat wear = again, on your own. Honestly, it’s hardly noticeable.

Pretty off-putting tone for a for sale ad. GLWS.

I like the tone first ad I have been both informed as well as entertained! Wish I were in the market for a 996C4s

Enjoyed reading that. I think at that price it'll sell quickly.

Great ad, I almost bought one of these with much higher mileage and worse condition for the same price. Love the c4s and love a no-bs seller, bravo

Here are pics of the car "clean". I'm debating the idea of getting it detailed but I'm up in the air on whether it would make that much of a difference.
I will post pics of the interior a little later.
I've gotten a lot of interest and requests for pics, hopefully this will suffice. Of course you're welcome to contact me for anything specific. I have a complete maintenance history and can likely answer any question as to what was done and when.
