1992 Porsche 964 C2 RS tribute Sunroof delete

1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Sunroof delete in Slate Grey Metallic built as an RS tribute.

This car was imported to the US last May and I have spent the better part of the year converting it into a 964 RS tribute. The 964 C2 started life in Japan as a low option car. In 2015 it was shipped to Germany by a collector, where it received its TUV registration and also a Classic Porsche card in Germany. The car remained stock this entire time.

Since the car arrived in the US, I have performed the 4 year annual service, which includes a valve adjustment, replacing all the belts, spark plugs, distributer caps, New Brake pads, New Brake Vibrations dampers and brake sensors, Brake fluid, transmission fluid, oil change, oil filter, etc. The car has been converted to R134A and the AC blows cold. The car is completely up to date with the Service and needs nothing mechanically.

I picked this specific car because I wanted a 1992-1994 slate grey car without a sunroof to turn into an RS tribute.. The 92-94 cars were updated 964’s with engine gaskets, updated interior and aero mirrors. These cars are much more rare and in higher demand than the 89-91 cars. The only 964 that was imported the to the US without a sunroof was a 93-94 964 RS America and these are also very rare cars and command a premium over a sunroof optioned RSA. I’ve only used new Genuine Parts and top of the line components to modify the C2. The car has been lowered to RS height, set to a street set up and professionally realigned. This 964 handles extremely well and rides on rails. Such a fun car to drive.

The car shows extremely well with only a couple rock chips up front and some small scratches near the door handles. There is a crack in the rear spoiler that is prevalent among these 964’s.

The car meters consistently around with the exception of the Frunk and roof which meter higher than the rest of the car. Overall, I’d say the condition of the paint is an 8 out of 10. But those looking for a completely original paint car- this is not it. I’d rather have some painted panels than a car that’s been beat up by rock chips. But that’s just me.

I’ve already had a few people asking about emissions. The car is registered and titled in Montana. This car is equipped with a catalytic converter so passing emissions should not be a problem, however it is up to the buyer to do their own due diligence. There are plenty of imported cars with CA license plates.

I don't believe getting this car emission compliant in California will be a huge issue, considering the 964 was available for sale stateside. You'll have to revert the car back to stock and take to a CARB-licensed laboratory. Relatively speaking, it isn't that expensive but give a lab a call to find out.

^

1. it WILL pass smog in CA, no problem
2. it can be titled in CA no prob
3. you will not get registration in CA, you need carb, goes to carb-license lab. it's > $10k

above was my due diligence. at that point, I passed.

that is NOT to say my due diligence is correct. if you are interested in ROW cars, you should due your own due diligence, perhaps you are luckier and smarter than I.

i figured 1, was not sure about 2, suspected 3 to be the case

unless it is an exempt car due to age, california registration is a bear for japanese or other non NA market imports

1. It can pass smog
2. It can pass vin verification
3. ROW vin is flagged in DMV system so it won’t get titled or registered.
4. To register in CA you have to send it to an independent Lab that’s certified by CA state for 8-12 weeks. They will administer the test, check for emissions equipment and if it all checks out you write a check for around $7000 and then go to DMV to pay for registration and get it registered.

Thanks everyone for their inputs.

The ideal buyer would be someone who does not need to register the car in California.

The car has a title already and is transferrable and has a cat for emissions. Only california has different registration laws than the other 48 states.

Just for the record, you guys shouldn't be negatively commenting on a seller's post. Read it, buy it or move on.

Talking about a car that May not get Titled where it is, is not Negging.

But if you said seller is a flipper, deceptive, misleading, dishonest, has posts deleted, Etc, Etc, That's a different story..............

.

it is a very desirable car, at a handsome price

if i could make it road legal in california i would be very tempted, my comments, along with john's and aleks's are expressed out of interest and/or intent to properly inform potential buyers, not to criticize or be negative

erikerik been around for a long time and so have I.
Erik knows the comments are legit and by no means negative.
I buy and sell faster than most ppl can blink their eyes. and for CA buyers, these comments are of utmost importance. for the other 49 so so states, it's fine.

Not only that but also the fact that no one is saying anything bad about the actual car or the asking price...or anything.
If anything it's an indictment about the regulatory and bureaucratic burdens here in California.
