Default Anyone have experience towing their track car with a tow dolly?

I live about 100 miles from Road Atlanta & Charlotte Motor Speedway and 150miles from AMP and CMP. I was planning to drive my track car to each track event, however after a clutch issue at Road Atlanta this week which left me stranded and a $600 tow home I'm thinking of towing the car to future events (about 1 a month). I don't have room for a trailer but could probably make room for a dolly. There is always a uhaul rental I guess. I appreciate any thoughts you guys have.

I tried it once.
I wish I hadn't.
I don't plan to try it again.

Here's a thread on this topic you may find useful.

A lot of guys use Uhaul rental trailers, some even rent the tow vehicle.
get some blocks of wood to raise the car enough to work with the trailer.
No storage needed.

I knew a guy who towed is 993 that way for years. If you get the balance right you are ok. But it's not super stable

We looked into a dolly for behind our RV and I was pretty surprised how big they are. Smaller than a trailer for sure but not small by any means. Something to consider.

The most common mistake is people put their Porsche in a trailer or on a dolly facing forward. The engine is not in the front of the car, so the car should be backwards to put the mass forward. It makes a huge difference in how the towed assembly behaves on the road.

A tow dolly is still not a good idea for track days, you can still be stranded in need of a flat bed tow home or to the shop. Get an inexpensive dual axle trailer and as others mentioned, store it at a self storage lot, they are usually around $30/ month.

I did it once for a 2K mile road-trip, with a *very* lightweight roadster in-tow. It was fine, but I get why most people don't do this.

Next time I do that much mileage, I'm getting a small Aluma.

For the occasional 100 mi track trip, I could see it making sense. If your concern is committing to space for the trailer, there's also a line of *folding* trailers, used mostly by bikers towing to Sturgis, and the like (name escapes me at the moment).

But again, depending on what your race car is, you could get creative. I noticed that some some snow-mobile trailers might have even worked for me, or for something small like an open wheel FF or B-mod AX'er.

Anyways, just spit-ballin', good luck with whatever you choose.

Why the "tow dolly" (2 wheels) and not the "auto transporter" (whole car) from U haul.

I used the transporter twice for my Cayman (have my own trailer now).

Might want to have some race ramps or homemade version to make getting up on the trailer easier
