Tire totes and Ratchet Straps
I have an open trailer and secured tires to the rack (plus center pole) with cheap 1" ratchet straps to keep tires from moving around.
My 1" cheap ratchet straps keep unbuckling and otherwise failing. On the way home today one came loose and wrapped itself inside a trailer wheel. Nice. Can someone recommend a suitable ratchet strap or similar? I'd like a "one piece" if possible where the fixed end loops around the tire and back into the ratchet. No S hooks joining two parts. Also, looking for nicer tire totes to protect the wheels and tires. Largest size is 335/35/18. DB |

Make sure you have enough of the strap spooled on the ratchet. That’s where most people screw up. |
My recommendation is Mac’s Custom Tie Downs. Their stuff is very high quality. Not cheap though. |

^ I would not use the totes if I were you. I did the same thing and had to abaondon the totes because the sides of the totes were catching the wind and flapping all over the place. Just set the wheels on the rack without the totes and make sure you don’t have any big rocks stuck on the tires that could fall on your car. The 1” ratchet straps will hold better to the rubber on the tires as well. |
That looks like a lot of work. The rod through the middle will keep the tires in place. Why not just put a movable padded plate on either end of the wheel and clamp it in place to keep the wheels from falling sideways? That's how trailex has done it for years.

You just need some tire dividers welded on and that center bar will be all you need. Easy for me to say because I can MIG or TIG AL-U-MIN-E-UM. And have a laser to cut the stuff.

I do a similar thing on a tire cart for all my tires and wheels but I use a 1.5 inch strap that wraps around and I use a plaster ring to protect the wheels.
A couple of sheets of cardboard work good between the rims too Whatever it takes to protect the rims |
