Tesla existential threat?

Just saw that the Mission-E is expected to retail at a starting price of approx. $75000. If you can have a Porsche (and a pretty good looking one at that) for less than a Tesla (with Porsche build quality and 'name'), why would you purchase a Tesla? My daughter has the X, and i'm impressed, but there is no way I would buy a Tesla if I could have a Porsche for the same or less money. I think this will take some serious air out of the T share price (of course, they DO have rockets..!!!). Thoughts...?

...just saw that Tesla uploaded a "Santa Mode" to their cars software. Pretty difficult to compete with that (i'm being serious....that shows an epic level of creativity, which is generally lacking in the mainstream auto industry).

Both can co-exist for a while. The stats from the journo who got to see the Mission E were not very impressive. 0-60 in 3.5 and top speed of 155mph on the top 650hp+ trim is what the P85+ (pre-D) used to pull three years ago. Let's hope they hone in the final 2019 build to perform at least at par with the MS let alone the new 2+2 roadster.

A bit of a conundrum for the 911 model. does it go hybrid? does it embrace PEV fully? when?
If the 911 does not go at least hybrid there is a good chance that it becomes marginalized (who wants to shell out 200K for a turbo to be smoked by a 100K electric in normal non-track driving).
On the other side, the electrics are going to have to drastically reduce battery weight to get a sports car under 3500 pounds.

Gonna be interesting. In the meantime, i'm keeping both ;)

I sold all of my Tesla stock (after a great run) on Monday. When I think about the European auto manufacturers $53 billion investment and 800 volt charging systems, I know that Tesla is in trouble. They just do not seem to be scaling production fast enough to avoid more stock dilution. Far better investments are being made in the cobalt suppliers and chip manufacturing companies like Nvidia.

Perhaps you should read the balance sheet - thats not existensial :) its very real and debt is spiralling out of control, can't get close to production targets and the cash burn has got after burners :)

I've read Tesla's balance sheet! Holy sweet mother of begeeeeeeezzzzzzzus - what a cash burning, profit lacking monster.

Hope - is not a good strategy!

Right. But people want Tesla's, not electric cars. If they wanted electric cars they are out there. As long as Tesla has that they will sell cars.

And I think people are getting over excited about Electric cars. The tech is not there. If the average age of a car is 11 years then if the quit selling gas cars tomorrow then in 2030 half the cars would be electric.

As far as performance I am interested to see the Porsche. Maybe won't be as quick but you will be able to race with it. All the Tesla vs anything comparisons I see are 0-60 and quarter mile only. Don't get me wrong, that is fun and cool and all but America perfected that in the 60's and you see what it got them.

Tesla is a lot more than 0-60, and it goes beyond just being an EV!

having driven one for 4 years it’s both an EV and an approach to cars that’s new.

Tesla can't sell all cars to all people. The Mission E will do very well as a viable choice to the Model S.

Tesla needs competition. There's enough room in the car industry for another great saloon. Tesla is not a threat. Tesla is an option, just like BMW, Mercedes, or Audi. Choice is great. Choice forces innovation and competition. I hope the Mission E is a great success and forces Tesla and other marques to build better, faster, cooler cars for less money. Consumers win when there's competition. I would seriously consider selling my S for a Mission E.

When's the last time anyone's looked at VW's shareprice? I just don't understand why tsla balance sheet is always in the conversation with any of their cars. I just want the company around long enough to warranty my car.

Teslas are built in the USA. I love that.

I'm committed to Porsches so I hope VW will be around for a long, long time for parts availability and stealer service. But I don't know their debt, balance sheet, nor do I own any VW stock.

Short Tesla...put a deposit on the mission E. It's going to be BIG

I’m looking forward to choices for EV’s - an EV platform with Porsche quality is something I’m very very interested in! Sell the S, keep the X for the Wife commute in the Mission E and flog the track with a GT3! That would be awesome!

Agree the model S is a great car. Agree electricity is coming. Lots of friends have Teslas. But they all still have a real car also. In CA may be able to have just an electric for most situations. But here in Ohio - with weather, range, and limited charging stations they are still years away.

Agreed

For reference my DD is a 2015 P90D (which is overkill, non P would be fine). Exceptional for daily fun commuting. License Plate = NUCLEAR

Along with a 2011 997.2 Turbo S Cab which is as raw and mind blowing as perhaps I can handle. License Plate = WEAPON

Unable to charge at home? Ohio looks good: supercharge.info

If Porsche chases drivers, they'll do fine. Tesla's focus is passengers, but handling a big skateboard battery can make up for that.
