You have to be careful with those Model S and X numbers, as they are U.S. sales only. For years, the first month or two of the quarter are mostly non-U.S. sales, and the final month largely U.S. sales. The numbers swing correspondingly. The Model 3 is pretty much only available in the U.S. right now, with a dribble to Canada.

Watch out for which test cycles those range stats are based on. Some are wildly optimistic. The EPA cycles are actually pretty good.

Right - but then up/down numbers are stated. For Model S/X the month-to-month differences might be interpreted wrongly because of the U.S. vs international delivery mix which varies by month in the quarter. Model 3s are pretty much only sold in the U.S. right now. So month-to-month trends are valid.

Historically doubling U.S. sales generally represents a fairly accurate WW number. As expected, the M3 has cannibalized MS sales, as was expected.

vin #Jxxxxxxxxxx100022 - 100,022 Model 3's - co-work's delivery last week - went over the car in parking lot with fine tooth comb - no real issues in fit/finish…at least least as good as the 330i xDrive it was sitting next to…which is similarly new…

100,000 Model 3's have shipped!

Close but I think not yet. Tesla has registered well over 100k vins, but they skip some blocks and go back. Because they don't deliver in order I suspect they are a couple weeks away- likely shooting for the end of the month?

There's a point cloud of delivered vins here, you can see the first over 100k was actually delivered some weeks ago:

Our best estimate is that Tesla has manufactured 92,615 Model 3s so far, and is now building approximately 3,274 a week.
Those figures, and the charts below, represent Bloomberg’s latest estimates and will automatically update to reflect changes in the data.
(Tesla reported on July 2 it had made 5,031 Model 3s over the previous seven days, the first time it passed the 5,000 milestone.)

A better perspective occurs in two weeks from today (9/1/18). Have to love those misleading VIN assignments, i.e. as related to actual sales. Probably some are being stored in nearby Burbank, CA.

fixed it for you

ok - I jumped the gun - still 9x,xxx cars when they really only started figuring out to make them in March of this year (nearly a year after Elon lied they had begun production) - puts them in the mix of successful car.

I picked up my TM3 back in July at the Fremont delivery center. We had some time to kill, so I walked around the lot a bit. Cars being delivered that day had VINs anywhere from 3x,xxx to 50,xxx. Mine was built in July and has a VIN in the 45,xxx range. In other words, they were all over the place.

August sales volume puts Tesla 5th in overall sedan sales for the month of august…according to this data in this link - pretty good for a car that cost twice as much as the 4 cars ahead of it on the list…

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2018/09...rs-in-america/

for the entire year they are 16th overall - but we all know due to their production competence they really have only been shipping in "volume" for part of the year rather than the whole year…top seller in August way Camry with 30,141 units sold - that's not impossible for Tesla to knock off…

if we spot them another 4 months of 17,000 sales a month that would be 56,417 + (4 * 17,000) = 124,417 cars - placing them firmly in 8th placed behind Hyundai Elantra and above Ford Fusion for total Sedan sales…so at full pace of 17,000 units month * 12 months that would equal 204,000 unit sold a year if they can pull that off - we'll see - but it puts them in the mix as a contender based on sales and revenue in the sedan market - regardless of price.

their current problems seems to be now that they can make 4-5 thousand cars a week, they don't have the delivery logistics to deliver that many cars from the factory - something I discussed on the Tesla forums in Nov. 2017 - and was roundly assured by the Tesla fans that I was full of crap…but here we are today and deliveries are being delay'd on finished cars cause Tesla doesn't know how to get them to the paying customers - ROFL

We'll know in a few weeks if Tesla pulls off a profitable quarter. I'm betting money they will. The question will then be if it's sustainable. Based on the publicly available information, it appears that demand is high and Tesla is making efforts to improve delivery while production is still high and improving. So I think it can be sustainable. Unknown is how much they will spend to produce Model Y, the semi-truck, and also the pickup truck. The new Roadster is low volume, so probably not a huge factor. If they build another gigafactory as planned, that will also be a big up front cost and I believe Musk is planning on a gigafactory in China as well as Europe.
