Default Spyder subforum?

I have noticed that people hijack Spyder picture threads to ask technical questions directly related to Spyders and even post "classifieds" in them. Seems like there is a need for a dedicated sub-forum within the 987-981 section that's just spyders. GT4 has one, so I'm feeling left out!

I'm also thinking I will build a sticky of all the spyder threads since 2010 and ham them into one post. I've found it informative to go back and read some of the early posts, but finding them has been time intensive.

Thoughts?

I agree. The Spyder is such a unique car, a separate sub forum would be nice.

Perhaps all Spyders including the two 987 variants, the RS60 Spyder and 2011/12 Spyder...

RS60 and 987.2 Spyders on my recent road trip. While I tend to read Spyder specific posts more than others I wonder if there is enough commonality between the generations to draw me to a sub forum and yet if it's too specific then there isn't sufficient traffic to keep it alive. Not many diys, not many driving stories.

That was the conclusion I drew also. I actually debated created a dedicated forum/website for Spyder owners that included DIY for Spyder specific issues but there’s so much crossover and so few spyder specific issues I didn’t see the immediate value. Website management gets pricey so if no benefit what’s the point? Hence why Rennlist hasn’t done the same.

Having said that I do wish we had a dedicated subforum to we can easily find Spyder posts

Good points I suppose. I hadn’t really thought through the fact that there are so few out there, and not all owners are forum regulars. There’s probably only a dozen or so that actively post here. Most of the posts I searched back for were actually from the original owners and those are long since sold (except for Afshin).

The "old" ones weren't true GT cars(They were still awesome and didn't need to be!), GT4's kind of were... but the new ones are with different engines and suspension. I didn't see the need with all of the carryover but now that they are just as different at a GT3 vs Carrera, it may warrant either their own subform or merge the GT3 subforum into a more generic GT forum. A lot of the GT3 guys seem to be active on the 991 forum for non GT specific discussions.

1,944 987.2 Spyders were built and the vast majority seem to be cream puffs with less than 30,000 miles on them after nine years. I’d wager their use is declining as the price paid emphasised their lack of use. That doesn’t bode well foe a healthy forum.

Meanwhile in New Zealand.

^^^^ Great footage and even better road! If this is typical of roads in New Zealand as a whole, I’d say you car guys down there are truly blessed.

The number of Spyder owners is about to increase significantly if the smoke signals coming out of Germany are to be believed and the 982 turns out to be a multi-year car produced in quantities sufficient to satisfy everyone that wants one, as we have heard from AP and others. Thus, while there are a limited number of current 987 and 981 Spyder owners worldwide (~ 5,000 if memory serves), that number could swell significantly with the addition of the 982. Possibly double? It will be interesting to see. Even if Porsche only makes ~2,500 982 Spyders worldwide as they did for the 981, that will still grow the ranks of modern Spyder owners by a third or so.

Whatever the numbers, happy to know so many more folks will get to experience the Spyder magic!

A sub forum may be nice . By the way I am an original owner of my Spyder . But then I'm also the original owner of my 1971 914 for whatever it's worth!

It’s worth a lot in my book. You’re coming up on 50 years of Porsche ownership. How many can say that? And to be the original owner of two mid-engines, bookends really in the Porsche lineup, is also very cool.

Interesting question...

What I see against it (as a moderator, and someone who sometimes advises admin on how to structure the forums) is - we have two top-level "Water-Cooled" forums covering the Caymans, and one of those - this one - brings in the boxer too. The other one https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-...nerations-126/ - has very little activity. When I first started thinking about picking up a Cayman I figured it would be easy to find info here on RennList - but I forgot how screwed up most of the forum structure is. It isn't particularly easy, and I actually see very little in the way of DIY writeups, which are one of the most valuable things a forum can have.

When I took the Cayenne forum under my care - I realized that the structure there was wrong. EVERYTHING went into one forum. I nudged the admin to rearrange it, then took on the somewhat tedious job of sorting out a large number of existing posts into the forum category that they belonged in. The only additional changes we've found necessary were to add in the 9YO subforum when the newest Cayenne was introduced about a year ago.

Since it's been around for a while, I very rarely now have to move a post to the correct forum. I've debated adding another subforum for "General - ALL ERA" Cayenne posts - a place where some of the "Lets see your Cayenne Pics" could go, and topics of general Cayenne interest, not-model specific.. but I've held off for now, still thinking about it.

So you have two Cayman Cayman/Boxter forums - I would suggest a structure a bit like:

TOP LEVEL Boxter and Cayman Under that would appear:
NEXT LEVEL:----Boxster - 1996-2004 (986)
NEXT LEVEL ----Boxster/Cayman 2005-2012 (987.1, 987.2)
NEXT LEVEL ----Boxster/Caymen 2012-2016 (981)
NEXT LEVEL ----718 Boxster/Cayman 2016-Current (982)
NEXT LEVEL ----Boxster Spyder
FINAL LEVEL ----Boxster/Cayman DIY All Models

I found the years of production in the forum title help guide new people (who don't know what a 987.1 is..) to the right forum.

Anyway - that's a rough read of what I could propose to the management. They actually asked if I'd look at the rest of the Rennlist structure for things like this at one point. Thing is - I don't have a Cayman yet - so my interest in the Boxster/Cayman might wane before I got to do all the sorting of existing messages. If anyone knows of a 2009-2012 PDK in a not dark color (I like white, yellow, blues, even greens, and some funky colors) and fairly well equipped, somewhere around $25-28,000 let me know. Be nice if I could see it (200-mile radius of 07762.)

Let me know what'cha think.

I appreciate the discussion and effort here, I think as subdivisions increase complications for new folks increase, they think they know where to post but really they don't, Boxster Spyder, what years? 987/981/718? all very different cars... I also believe there is a responsibility on a Porsche owner to know the nomenclature, i.e. what model do I own? I've been an air-cooled 911 guy for many years (unfortunately no longer) and believe me on the air-cooled 911 forum a day would not pass without a 996, 997, 991 posting.
