What Maintenance / Upgrades / Checks to do while engine out? (997.1 C2S)
Hey Guys,
Long time reader, first time poster - recently purchased a 997.1 C2S Cabrio to build into a sprint & weekender, and am just looking for some advice on recommendations on things I should be doing during the build process (while we have the whole car stripped)
Car has done 95,000kms / 60,000miles.
The engine / gearbox is coming out this weekend, and things i had in mind :
- Compression test before removal
- Check & Possibly Upgrade Clutch & Flywheel
- Change All belts
- Check for leaks or wear
- Custom exhaust is being fabricated
What else can people recommend doing while the car is at this stage?

Well what do you want out of it? When you say sprint, do you mean autocross? You want more power, handling, sound....or all of these or just a well sorted mostly stock car?

Power, Balance, Handling ... all the above.
The Porsche will mainly be a sunday car with occasional time attack sprints (usually 4-10 laps a session) not sure if that is autocross? (i'm from Australia and we generally call them sprint days)
So far the modification list that will be fitted over the next 4 weeks :
- Recaro SE Pole Position Leather (pair)
- Sparco R325 Wheel, Boss & Steering Spacer
- Rear seat removal / Custom X half cage with Harness Bar
- Custom Stainless Headers / Cat delete
- Custom GT3 Style Exhaust
- H&R Cargraphic Lowering Springs
- Work Meister S13P (street)
- BBS FI Wheels (track)
Am more looking at what common problems around this age could be addressed easily while the engine is out, but any upgrades as well that could be performed easily at this stage is definitely a bonus!

If it's a 2005 and has the dual row IMS bearing, replace it. I wouldn't bother replacing the bigger single row 2006+ bearing. The rest of my recommendations are pretty cheap and mostly easy with the engine out. Replace the RMS although you might require a specific tool to install it. Do the plugs and coils also, easy with the engine being out, knuckle scraping otherwise. Depending on the service history of the car you may want to do the oil air separator, the water pump or the thermostat.

Brakes. New rotors, new pads, new fluid. Track prep 101. Stop before you go or show.

Hey Guys thanks for that!
The car is a 2007.
So the 3.8 still has IMS failure? If so will do.
I work for Project Mu so Brakes are sorted : Should be running HC800 Pads all round, and then SCR-Pro Rotors once the current ones are down.
Plugs definately! Any recommendations ?

I wouldn't bother with the 2007 IMS bearing, it'll be fine. Like others have said, do the RMS unless it was done recently. For the plugs, go with the Bosch 3 electrode job that's specifically made for these cars (Bosch FGR-5-KQE0). I've had zero problems with them or the original set. Coil packs have a tendency to hairline crack over time on these cars so inspect yours. I had to change mine at 75km due to cracking.

^ a few reasons :
- doing the clutch & RMS
- for fun (have never pulled apart a 997)
- seam welding areas possibly for a bit of extra rigidity
- check over the engine, check everything, clean the engine and underbody
Car is getting a full respray and body mods as well so be a good chance to check everything over in the process.
