R8?
So I am in the VERY early stages of considering a new R8. I have a completely loaded 911/50 including ceramics and Burmeister. It has 11.5k km (around 7500 miles). I am considering a trade but I am worried about not having a 911 even though the R8 is pretty special as well. Has anyone here driven an R8 or have any thoughts on this. Mine is PDK and have no interest in driving a MT anymore so the R8 is good from that standpoint.

A lot of X-R8 guys on the 991 GT3 forum, too, also ask over there.

Interesting you say that because this all started when I inquired about a GT3. I was told that all were pre-sold even though I have a good relationship with my dealer. Then I saw a new red R8 in the showroom and began to wonder......

New is the way to go if you make the switch. The auto transmission in the first generation R8 was terrible. The new one is greatly improved.

I'll see Iron Man this weekend, I'll ask him, too. Gwyneth and I had a falling out, our I'd ask her. Mainly, I kept falling out.

The new R8 will be worth less than your 50th in a couple years.
Don't really think it's an "upgrade" either. What's wrong with the 50th?? Great car and prices holding VERY strong.

I'd like an R8 but would not like the attention that goes along with one.

I considered the R8. It's a nice car, it drives very well, very capable. It doesn't have a lot of soul, character, but to be fair, neither does the 991.
It is special and people notice it. You will be a target for everyone taking pictures, staring at you, thumbs up, women will throw their undergarments in your general direction and little boys will want to grow up to be just like you, but better looking.
In the end, I bought the 991. For the money, it's a better car. Audi reliability is not up to the level of Porsche. The 991 has more character and drives better. It's a flashy car, but less so than the R8.
FWIW, I sold the 991 a year later and bought the Boxster. So maybe in hindsight I would have been happier with the R8, but we'll never know.

I came from an R-tronic R8 V8. It was a great car but the 991 is better. In terms of gearboxes the PDK is light years ahead of the Audi single clutch. The single clutch lurched and felt clunky. The MY14 and MY15 have the Gen 1 looks with the newer S-tronic (DCT) transmission, which is much better then the previous trans. but not as good as the PDK.
The Gen 2 R8s is an all around amazing car! I like everything about them except the high price.
IMO: I'd keep your 50th.

The gen 1 R8 is not even a consideration. 2017 new or possibly order a 2018. It's very tough because the 50th is special(at least I think it is). BUT if the deal is good enough and the R8 is comfortable I may go for it. At 6'3" and 260 lbs. I may not even fit in it. I'm not sure if it is as roomy as the 991. The underlying theme here is a normally aspirated engine. I don't want Italian so GT3/R8 are my only 2 considerations. Dealer asked about new GTS but I said no faster than it takes to spool up those twin turbos. So we will see how much they sharpen their pencils. As a straight trade it would be hard to say no.
