Default Tuning is finally possible on the locked 992.1 & 992.2 ECUs

I have some pretty interesting industry news. As many of you may know Porsche uses several Bosch MG1 ECUs across their lineup of H6 engines found in the 911 and 718 platform vehicles. Tuners have been tuning the earlier 3.0T, 3.7T, and 4.0L engines for a few years now as those vehicles used a version of the ECU with less security.

However that all started to change a few years back.

Bosch updated the MG1CP007 and MG1CS047 ECUs to a new Generation 2, sometimes referred to as Hardware 80, or H80 which locked out tuners. All new keys. All new encryption. Basically, they made changes which ended up locking out tuners with few scalable solutions.

But that has all changed today.

There is now an unlock for these ECUs, including the new MG1CP994 which includes the brand new 3.6T Hybrid engine found in the single turbo GTS and the twin turbo Turbo S. This means once the ECU is unlocked, tuners can now start delivering tunes. I don't want to turn this into a commercial posts, so I will not be sharing links, but these ECUs are now unlocked meaning more tuners can start delivering tunes for these vehicles.

I just wanted to share this exciting news and I can't wait to see what everyone does with their vehicle!

If you plan on downpipes beware of tuners that won't support them. I got bamboozled by IE, they also use a scummy token based system for maps. Beware of that with tuners too.

Those use a different Bosch MG1 ECU, but I suspect you'll see some industry news in the not to distant future.

Tuning has been possible for a while in those ECUs. But as I understand it, unlike earlier bosch ecus, these cannot be reversed and be undetected. As soon as a tuned ecu is powered up in a car, porsche will see the tune due to car sending heart beat signals to pag servers.

Early Cayenne are "unlocked" so to speak, or at least the method is well known. We offer it without mail-in unlock.

But no way to reverse back to stock without leaving a trace, correct?

Probably need an ECU swap to do something like that.

So I have a current RS6 that we tuned to over 850 hp and my wife loves the Cayenne so I was gonna get her a Cayenne S and tune that also. Same 4.0 twin turbo.

But you do know in .2 Bosch ECUs, you cant swap an ECU without recoding every module on the car. Every module knows each other’s hardware key including ECU. Recoding the new ECU is a dealer type of work, not easy and more importantly completely disables the tuned ECU.

To clarify, it would need to be a swappable clone.

Got it. I'd like to thank you for your efforts to make this possible for the community. It is a positive development.

As an owner of 992.1 TTS with a tune, the ability to revert back to stock on the fly and be completely undetected is very convenient. I guess if someone is tuning these newer ECUs, they are going all the way.

There is another issue with tuning, CA CARB OBDII interface somehow has the ability to detect these tunes. Its really nasty stuff. If they do catch you, the fines are pretty bad and they can ultimately impound your car. So for people living in CA, this is important to highlight.

Absolutely. You're welcome. But, just FYI, on the 992.1 you mentioned, just flashing back to stock is not invisible to Porsche. If they plug into the OBD port, they will know it was flashed at one point.
