I got to drive a 718 GTS 4.0 6MT the other day and thought it felt a lot like the 997 Carrera S 6MT, so I did some LLM comparing and it seems like if you compare 6MT to 6MT the performance and dimensions are quite close (The PDK was improved over the years, so the GTS is a lot quicker to 60 in PDK).
To me the difference was the 718 felt a bit less floaty even with the suspension raised 10mm per the bulld sheet, and I dont know the technical term for it but I felt more "one with the car" in the twisties. The 997 was more fun to downshift and accellerate, felt less planted and modern but in a good way- could have been the tires...
All this to say, maybe if you're having trouble finding a 997, you should consider a 718 GTS 4.0
This is an excellent example of numbers not telling the whole story of a car. A base 987.1 Cayman, for example, has power, weight and dimensional figures that are comparable to a 964 Carrera 2, but the driving experience is vastly different. And this without mentioning aesthetics and era of origin which are a huge part of an emotional car purchase. But it can be a fun exercise to compare models like this.
