Default Crusty coolant sleeves - update

I finally got around to fitting the replacement coolant sleeves at the front of the car. When I was refreshing the front suspension I noticed the two sleeves at the end of the aluminium pipes were crusty an weeping a bit of coolant.

Took the car for a run with the heater full on to circulate the coolant. Put it back in the garage to cool down. Went back to the car and noticed a puddle of pink coolant under the front of the car. Here we go; either the heater matrix has gone pop it my crossover pipes have let go.

So, up on the scissor lift, undertray removed and I could see the culprit. One of the sleeves, previously just crusty, was heavily leaking coolant. Must have been because the heater had been full on and caused it to get worse. Drained coolant from the car via the little drain plug at the water pump. Back to the front of the car to unclip the crusty hoses. They both came apart reasonably well. Lots more coolant was released. Just as well I had a big catch pan under the car. Altogether I got just slightly over 30 litres of coolant out of the car (by my reckoning).

Cleaned up the insides of the plastic and aluminium pipes with a scotch brite pad - thanks Bruce - and applied grease to the new sleeves. All installed now with new spring clips. I’m just waiting on a delivery of a vacuum coolant filler today so I get new coolant in and check my work is serviceable.

I have attached some pics. You’ll see that one of the old sleeves was more corroded than the other to the point where it moved the o ring.

I refreshed some of my rubber coolant hoses when I replaced my water pump and thermostat a few years ago. I was kind of concerned about this as well. But it doesn’t seem to be something we deal with on this side of the pond, at least not that I’ve seen. Every time I see this it’s in the UK and I think once down under.

Odd to hear that. Mine is a 2007 model year. The sleeves which I removed were genuine Porsche parts so could have been in there since the factory. Perhaps it is more of a mileage/age issue; my car has just turned 79k miles and the coolant which came out seemed healthy enough.
The car had G12+ coolant in it and that is what I’ll also be using.

That is funny, I thought the same thing when I saw the picture. Assumed it was a UK car.

I can see it happening to a car in the rust belt with very high miles here in the states, but overall you do not see that too often state side.

Great job on the repair!

Mine is an 06 and I was around 85K miles when I did mine. I really think it’s a climate thing. I used the Porsche coolant.
