Time flies when you're having fun... 10 years with the RS
It feels like yesterday that I flew to Montreal to pick up my 997.2 RS, but in reality it was 10 years ago and there was a dusting of snow when I landed. The car had been for sale for 9 months here on RL and nobody wanted it because it was in Canada, even though it was originally a US car. The seller kept dropping the price to the point where I knew I had to buy it or somebody else would beat me to it. I sold a 997.2 GT3 and a 964 C2 3.8 in order to fund the purchase and I knew it was the right decision and how special the RS 3.8 is...
Drove the car across the border armed with all necessary documentation and wasn't asked to pay any duty at Customs, phew! Then 4.5 hours in the rain back to Manhattan. A few days later I took the RS on a 1,500 mile adventure with friends to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, the North Georgia Mountains and down to PEC ATL, which had just opened... What a way to get to know a car, making memories that last a lifetime...
Fast forward to today, out on the West Coast where I can drive it year round and every time I get behind the wheel always feels like a special occasion. Whether it's a jolt up the local canyons, the PCH, the desert or up to Monterey... This car doesn't get old, the experience only gets better.
And while I don't frequent the forums as much as I did 10 years ago, I wanted to say thanks to everyone here for keeping our passion alive!
Great notes and pictures Ilko! I've had my car exactly 6 years now, time flies, and my first one at the early part of last decade I had for 3 years. The first one was a lot of track miles, current one a lot of street miles. Eager to see your "new" car because come to think of it, I don't think I've yet seen it in person wearing green.
Thank you boys! Really fun being part of this group.
And to clarify, this car was originally from Florida, I didn’t ****** it out of the Canadian allotment, just put it back in the South of the Border column.
Derek, the car ‘s been green for 8 months now, I can’t believe you haven’t been to the house in so long. You gotta come over when the new toy arrives!
Congrats! I 'm at 8.5yrs will hit the 10yr club next fall, by far the longest I've ever owned one car. What is your best memory/experience in the 10yrs you've owned it?
Awesome Ilko. I remember the older days on Rennlist when you were posting often, mostly 964 content. Always appreciated and still do appreciate your insights. Great times buddy.
Where in Rancho was that pic taken? Almost looks like a track. I know Rancho well from my days playing Golf there. Awesome place, and pic.

Yeah, for me too, by far the longest I've ever owned a car! I've found myself in the fortunate position to have gotten the cars I want at this point and am not selling anything or lusting after anything new...
The RS and I have been through a lot. I love all the road trips, whether on the East Coast or Rennsport, etc. My favorite memory is perhaps a bit morbid... One year we were driving down the interstate in North Carolina during a torrential rain storm at maybe 35-40MPH. The water was so deep that I kept feeling the rear tires losing traction. At one point a car passed me and pushed even more water into my lane. It was too much. All of a sudden I found myself heading towards the median concrete divider, backwards. Total code brown moment!
I had been in that same situation 10 years earlier when I drove through coolant at a Lime Rock track day and wrote off my first 964. It was such a traumatic experience mentally. You have no idea how many times I've gone over the incident in my mind and how I wish I had the foresight to turn the wheel instead of being just a passenger, thinking that would've saved it.
Well, here I was in that same situation, but in the RS! This time I was able to regain my composure, jerked the wheel and was able to slow down and turn the car around enough to avoid hitting the concrete with my rear end... Had it not been for the prior accident and all the sleepless nights analyzing what I should've done at that time, I might have a salvage RS in my garage now.

Thank you Chris! This is a private go-kart track, on a friend's property.
